“For many years in Brazil, we had this idea that only the state government should take care of public safety…” said Maria Eduardo Couto, Technology and Data Coordinator for Civitas @Prefeitura_Rio. “But what we understood at Civitas and City Hall is that, as a city, we have a lot of information about what is happening in the territory.”
By bringing together cross-departmental information, Civitas, an advanced security hub, has assisted in over 4,000 cases and partnered with the Secretariat for Women to develop Mulher. Rio, a platform connecting women facing violence to vital services.

We’re excited to welcome Mayor Kate Colin of @CityofSanRafael to our proposed @sxsw panel!
San Rafael is using sea-level rise modeling and flood risk analysis to inform long-term planning. Mayor Colin will bring that experience to the conversation alongside Mayor @DeanTrantalis of @FTLCityNews, in our SXSW 2027 session, “Can Cities Predict Climate Disaster Before It Happens?”, moderated by @RVHaynes, SVP and Managing Director of Bloomberg Philanthropies What Works Cities.
Together, they’ll explore how cities are using climate data to prepare their communities for what’s ahead.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, @cuidadmendoza began using data out of necessity, and that experience became the foundation for a lasting commitment to data-driven government, says María Candela Grec, head of the Department of Strategic Planning and Project Management.
What started as monitoring public health data has turned into more than 70 dashboards to track and inform public policy decisions across departments, including finance, human resources, public safety and more.

📹 In 2020, @Muni_Renca discovered that youth who needed mental health support weren’t receiving it. City hall used data to develop and establish a citywide, school-based mental health initiative called Renca Contigo.
SVP and Managing Director @RVHaynes sat down with Nataly Vargas, Head of Local Public Policies, to learn how they use data to implement and design the program.
“We wanted to address it with a strategy that was more preventive than reactive,” said Vargas.
