Wikicurious: Windy City on Wikipedia, with Wikimedians of Chicago (October 2) “Wikicurious: Windy City on Wikipedia“ is a community editing event on Friday, October 2 from 2pm – 6pm at University of Chicago’s Richard J. Daley Library, focused on open text, public knowledge, and Chicago. Participants will work collaboratively to create and improve articles related to local history, cultural landmarks, notable individuals, events, and community institutions. Hosted by Wikimedia NYC, Wikimedians of Chicago User Group, WikiLatinos, and UIC's Digital Scholarship Hub, this beginner-friendly event welcomes newcomers and experienced Wikimedians alike. Participants will receive training on how to edit Wikipedia.

Meet Amy Carleton, new Programs Manager for the North American Hub! Amy (User:Amyc29) has built Wikimedia initiatives in both educational and cultural settings. Her work centers on community engagement, program development, partnerships, capacity building, and widening access to free knowledge.
Amy says: Hi all! I am Amy Carleton and I am a Wikipedian. 🙂 For about two decades, I have been an active participant in the Wikimedia community: as an educator (I teach at MIT and, to date, my students have contributed more than one million words to the encyclopedia!), as a researcher and practitioner (I have published research articles and have presented about Wikipedia at numerous academic conferences), and as a “civilian” community organizer of edit-a-thons and other public-facing GLAM events (my project, “Community of Sol: Writing Black Music History,” has trained dozens of new editors to augment and diversify coverage on Wikipedia pertaining to artists, institutions, and creative work). In my role as North American Hub Project Manager, I look forward to working with Wikimedia communities and contributors across the region by helping to streamline access to resources, training, knowledge, expertise, and – of course – connections to other contributors!
