Happy #PhycologyFriday. Here’s a glimpse at the diatom diversity in the Clinch River of Southwestern Virginia this week. The frustules are from diatoms harvested with a 20um plankton net and treated with nitric acid.

#PhycologyFriday My students and I applied algal metabarcoding to address a basic question about freshwater mussel diets. Spoiler - they love to eat stramenopiles!
You just never know where an interest/skill set in Phycology might take you.

We are so happy to have a genome resource in the Journal of Phycology. Thank you to the PSA and J Phyc editorial team for creating this new opportunity!
Here’s to all the past and present phycological GenBank records with peer reviewed sources 🥂😀!

Gyrosigma sp. frustule from the Clinch River in SW Virginia. I love that it’s a large diatom with clear striae making it relatively easy to identify! Collected numerous individuals with a plankton net but none were alive 🤔

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise is searching for a visiting Organismal/Evolutionary Biologist. It’s a two year appointment to fill in for one of our faculty who is going to the NSF to be a temporary program director.

Sometimes I just need to ignore course prep and/or administrative work, disappear into the field or lab and explore a water sample. Here’s a fun find from one of those moments. I believe this is a Eudorina. It came from the Clinch River in southwest VA. #PhycologyFriday

Diatoms have so many excellent qualities. This week I’m appreciating that most will stay still for micrographs! This one was collected from the Clinch River in SW Virginia using a 20 micron plankton net. #PhycologyFriday

Visited some tranquil freshwater Appalachian karst springs in Lee Co., VA - saw a few macro-greens a few micro-greens, the diatoms however were the stars…lots of them! Micrograph is a “leaf” from a submerged moss coated with an oval diatom. #PhycologyFriday #Appalachia

Collecting makeshift periphyton samplers from the Clinch River in southwestern Virginia. A beautiful summer day in the Appalachian mountains. We’ve had some hazy days from those wildfires but this wasn’t one of them. #PhycologyFriday #Appalachia

Diatom frustule from the Clinch River in southwestern Virginia (Encyonema?). This was in a drop of water, not a cleared and mounted diatom prep. I was able to bump the slide and “rotate” it for several views. #PhycologyFriday

A lively and lovely freshwater Paramecium with symbiotic algae. I waited a looong time for it to stop moving so I could snap this micrograph 😵💫. Found in a constructed wetlands pond in Wise, VA. #phycologyfriday

Two diatoms from a constructed wetland in Wise, VA. I’m reminded of images I’ve seen of a Chihuahua standing next to a Great Dane 😊. #phycologyfriday

Found last week in Wise, VA. Some ciliates that have been dining on diatoms. The one on the left seriously needs to call it a day! #phycologyfriday

Went on a herp egg clutch survey with @wally_smith1 this past week in the mountains of SW Virginia and found Spotted Salamander embryos (A. maculatum) with its symbiotic alga Oophila amblystomatis! He snapped this awesome photo. #phycologyfriday

A serendipitous algal diorama I saw this week from a plankton-net sample in Southwestern Virginia. There’s definitely a Ceratium, a diatom (Fragillaria?), and a green blob 🤔(eyespot suggests it’s maybe a Euglenoid or athecate dinoflagellate?) #PhycologyFriday #FreshwaterAlgae

#PhycologyFriday I was recently interviewed by the NPR program With Good Reason for their summer reading episode and I included “Freshwater Algae of North America”. I’ve honestly spent more time with it than any other book this summer! @goodreasonradio withgoodreasonradio.org/epis…
