The documentary “Israel Palestine on Swedish TV 1958-1989” is incredible for how it captures the many contradictions of Israel’s existence hardening in real time. By force of circumstance alone, it shows that Israel’s existence is untenable. It is a great historical contribution.

In the last three years, the Palestinian struggle for self-determination has become a global freedom struggle for democracy. Israel is the Confederacy.

No one in the U.S. wants to hear it, and it can barely be said over the clamoring pathological dependency on the party system and the self-regard of electioneering, but the only way to breathe life into U.S politics is organized and relentless mass refusal.

What I find consequential about the Haitian Revolution is that it was the enslaved Africans who took seriously the slogans of the bourgeois revolutions and were the first to attempt to push them beyond the limits of bourgeois society.

I know even very smart people are functionally illiterate on this point, so it always bears repeating that what Marxism and Christianity have in common, perhaps even more than the primacy of the oppressed, is the critique of religion.

Abolitionists theorized the ‘slave power’ to understand how minoritarian interests of the south constituted a system that enveloped all the nation’s institutions and subordinated more and more of the world to slavery. We have a great need for theorizing Zionism along these lines.

Nikole Hannah-Jones said Mamdani lacks the political will and courage to enact real solutions to address systemic problems. This is why he focuses on low-hanging political wins like potholes and free tickets to avoid real issues like policing, NYCHA, jails, HRA, and homelessness.

I have been teaching a wonderful Love and Sex course over the past few weeks, and will be posting my lectures on Substack as it continues. With my first post, I share an introduction to the course themes and my two lectures on Sigmund Freud’s “Infantile Sexuality” essay.

The popular return of middlebrow cinema has brought about a flood of movies that are only vaguely about something, that gesture toward the idea of having themes but stop at having hype moments and aura. We need a more discerning audience if better films are going to be made.

Yes, this is about Primetime, but it's also about virtually every other A24 film getting made and then some.

To be a willing subject should not mean a subject free from determination but a subject capable of determining, i.e., an active subject. A will-less subject is a passive subject who is only ever acted upon, in a word an automaton.

If my deepest philosophical commitment could be summarized in a single line, it would be Sartre’s claim in Search for a Method “that historical materialism furnished the only valid interpretation of history and that existentialism remained the only concrete approach to reality.”

This is absolutely true. The pedagogical ‘common sense’ that lectures are bad, that assigned readings should not be challenging, that teachers must ‘meet students where they are at’ rather than helping them to cross distance, is an unfortunate misconception of a good education.
Seems to me that a lot of trendy education theory & practice is just not ready to admit that the vast majority of kids do not “naturally” want to learn what they are being taught. Learning is often boring & frustrating. You have to teach kids to tolerate boredom & frustration.
