From sequence–structure analysis of natural 3HBs, we derived polar layer packing rules + charge patterning to design 2x ABN heterotrimer peptides, seeding hyperstable, monomeric proteins in clockwise & anticlockwise topologies by precisely controlling helix–helix interfaces.
New paper from our group combines rational and computational design to build antiparallel 3-helix bundle (3HB) assemblies and single-chain proteins with defined topology and tunable thermal stability. 🧩pubs.rsc.org/en/Content/Arti…
As part of this new chapter, our research group will expand its activities to Copenhagen, forming a joint presence across both sites. We will continue to operate in Bristol, while establishing new lines of research and collaborations within the CPD.
We are thrilled to announce that Professor Dek Woolfson has been appointed Director of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Centre for Protein Design (CPD) at the University of Copenhagen.

🚛🧬 New paper on rXiv! We reveal how cargo binding activates kinesin-1 by dislocating the TPR shoulder — a key structural switch that unlocks motor movement.
Happy reading!

Another publication in collaboration with Tom Oliver's group in @BristolChem We harness de novo α-helical barrels as "molecular flasks" to bind and orient small molecules in aqueous solution. Using FRET and photodimerization, we showcase the potential for templating new chemistry
🔬 New paper from our lab! We explored peptide exchange dynamics in de novo coiled-coil assemblies, from dimers to heptamers, revealing both faithful and promiscuous behaviours. Using a new fluorescence-based assay, we uncovered design strategies to enhance orthogonality.
Exciting opportunity to join the University of Bristol as a BBSRC-funded Research Associate (4 years) working between us and @MarkDodding's lab. The post is on designing de novo peptides and proteins using both rational design and computational design and protein biochemistry.
Our new work with @ChrisWellsWood introduces the Protein Design Archive (PDA) – a comprehensive database of designed proteins. Explore 40 years of advances in design, with insights on trends, challenges, and new opportunities! 🧬💡

Last week we said (a very difficult) goodbye to Dr @KIAlbanese. 3 years has passed since she joined us, she’s been such an inspirational leader and mentor. As Katherine starts her independent career @WakeChemistry, we cheer her on every step of the way. Go shine, Katherine!!💖🌟
New preprint out in bioRxiv, in collaboration with @MarkDodding . Check out Jess's work on engineering an allosteric switch into kinesin-1 motors through de novo protein design. Congrats to Jess and the team! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
We have a funded PhD position starting Sept 2024 on the

Check out our latest collaborative work with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, on understanding the molecular mechanism of oligomerisation of a peptide representing the STIL coiled-coil domain. @freddie__martin@HebrewUmdpi.com/1422-0067/24/19/146…
Last week Dek and Xiyue @SeraphimLeng presented at the 8th Foldamers symposium in Munich, engaged with great science and had lots of interesting discussions with the wider foldamer community! Many thanks to the organising committee @ak_huc and @LMU_Muenchen for the conference✈️
📢 New paper out in @NatureChemistry, well done to Alex, Andrey and the team! Read more to see the de novo designed proteins that form membraneless organelles in E. coli nature.com/articles/s41557-0…
Friday submission day - Katherine and Rokas enjoying their celebratory cold beers at Bristol’s iconic suspension bridge, kudos to them both for their hard work!! Check it out
