🟦 Our Regional Director, Namatai Kwekweza, delivered the welcome remarks at our Media and Information Literacy Training of Trainers in Windhoek, Namibia. 🎤She opened by saying, "On behalf of WELEAD Africa, I warmly welcome each and every one of you to the Connected Media, Informed Citizens Regional Media and Information Literacy Training of Trainers." ➡️She then went on to acknowledge and appreciate our project partners: MISA Regional, Canal France International (CFI), the Embassy of France in Zimbabwe, the Embassy of France in Namibia, and the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères). She further recognized everyone who contributed their time, expertise, and energy to the event. 🎤Towards the end of her remarks, she shared: WHY YOUNG PEOPLE ARE CENTRAL TO THIS PROJECT: She said, "The project that brings us together recognizes that young people are not simply passive consumers of information. Young people are bloggers, vloggers, influencers, podcasters, activists, journalists, community communicators, and content creators. They are shaping what others see and discuss every day. The project, therefore, places young people at the center of the response. It seeks to strengthen their Media and Information Literacy, help them recognize disinformation and hate speech, understand how information spreads, and equip them to push back against harmful narratives in their communities. This is important because we should not approach young people only as individuals who need protection from the information environment. 🟦Southern Africa Media Summit- Youth Take-Aways: "Attending SAMS2026 was a powerful reminder that for young people in the SADC region, freedom of expression is no longer just about the right to speak, it is about the right to participate, to create, to organise and to be heard without fear. Listening to discussions on the digital civic space, I was struck by the paradox we are living in: young people make up 76% of our region and are its most active digital citizens, yet the same spaces that give a young woman in Zimbabwe or Zambia the power to mobilise a community are increasingly weaponised through disinformation, vague cybersecurity laws, and intimidation. What stayed with me most is the balance we must strike. We cannot combat disinformation by criminalising expression that only teaches a generation entering public life for the first time that speaking out is dangerous. For me, the solution is not less speech, but more empowered speech. If we invest in Media and Information Literacy, young people shift from being seen as vulnerable consumers to what they already are: fact-checkers, creators, educators and defenders of credible information.
