Pan Dorobou is a fun little show with superb animation. Expressive, got a real sense of volume despite the simple designs, and capable of rooting the humor in the movement itself. The punchline in episode #02 (solo key animation by Shingo Takenaka!) would feel at home in Nichijou
The more outrageous sequences naturally stand out more, but the fundamental solidity of the animation is even better in laid-back scenes. The casual volumetry of this thieving loaf is technically impressive & there's small visual gags only enabled by how precise the animation is
Kayoko Ishikawa's new ending is unsurprisingly lovely. She became much more adventurous with the following endings on the original show, but it just makes sense to return to a Calendar Girl-ish framing for the first new ending of the series
Saw Ghost with Shingo Natsume in attendance! Appears inscrutable even compared to Sonny Boy, but below the experimental surface & deliberate emotional inertness there's a clear human desire to find purpose and leave something behind
It doesn't present a definitive answer about how to live in a world where technology has robbed people of a mechanical goal (sure sounds familiar), but multiple individuals find their own means of permanence even beyond death. And in that way, they can become hope for others
