This whole sordid incident highlights a big problem for Canadian conservatives. The trolling and mockery of people at a Canadian cadet camp (including a teenager) by Hegseth started with posts from alt right Canadian "influencers," following a now familiar pattern. It doesn't take these anger merchants of the Canadian right very long to figure out that there is a *much* bigger market for their bile in the United States. The US is 8x our population, but polling suggests that the percentage of Americans who are tuned into MAGA style populism is at least 4 times greater than Canada. So by producing content that appeals to the MAGA base, right wing Canadian content producers have a huge incentive to speak to an adjacent American market that is orders of magnitude larger than their accessible audience in Canada. That gets monetized through higher engagement numbers, and if they're really lucky, invitations to appear on MAGA media outlets that build their brand. One way of doing so is content that mocks Canada. That appeals both to the small cohort of perennially angry hard right populists in Canada, plus the much larger number of Americans prone to believe that Canada is a socialist dystopia under the thrall of the Chinese Communist Party, etc. The Hegseth post followed a similar pattern. Right wing Canadian quisling posts mockery of Canada, it ricochets around the US online right, gets on the radar screen of a social media staffer in the Trump Administration, and voila: a post from the Secretary of War body shaming young cadets in Vernon, BC. High fives all round! In this case the US traction came from the "Pleb Reporter" account of libertarian live streamer Nick Belanger, who was one of the Maga North / Alberta separatist content producers given free red carpet treatment at the @CPC_HQ Convention earlier this year. One prominent Conservative MP (who should know better) said he was "proud to welcome these content creators, these citizen journalists who serve to uphold the truth" to the Convention. If that is really the attitude of the Conservative Party towards these unpatriotic anger merchants, it should get used to a very, very long run in opposition. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be this way. A positive, patriotic conservatism that focuses on the concerns of the broad mainstream rather than these marginal voices of division can win back the confidence of Canadians.

Every year on this day, Poland and Ukraine honor the memory of people – civilians – who were killed in Volyn during the Second World War. Today, representatives of the Ukrainian state took part in joint prayer services alongside representatives of the Polish state – both here in Ukraine and in Poland. Ukraine is doing its part to fairly establish the facts about those who were killed in those years. Search operations are underway at the sites of former villages and burial locations. Ukraine is committed to accelerating this process. In just two days, exhumation work will begin in the villages of Ostrivky and Volya Ostrovetska. What we need is the full truth and a Christian commemoration of the victims. But we must also remember that today, in our own time, Ukraine and Poland face one common threat, which is a deadly threat to our independence, to both our states, to every city and every village. That threat is Russia. As we speak about the past, we must not cast doubt on the future of our nations – the future of Ukraine, of Poland, and the future of all of Europe.

Одного дня нам доведеться поговорити з поляками про те, що треба називати речі своїми іменами. Наприклад, що вирізання польських КОЛОНИСТІВ українськими повстанцями було жахливою трагедією, але передумови цієї трагедії були на 100% створені польською ОКУПАЦІЙНОЮ АДМІНІСТРАЦІЄЮ. Або про те, що термін "Малопольща", яким поляки називають етнічні українські землі, нічим принципово не відрізняється від російського колоніального терміну "Малоросія". І про історичну іронію того факту, що поляки поділили Україну з більшовиками в такий самий спосіб, в який потім німці ділили з більшовиками Польщу. Про те, що на момент існування УПА поляки були для українців такими ж окупантами, як і росіяни. Про те, що УПА створювалася задля звільнення українського народу від окупації (як московської, так і польської), і саме за це вона вшановується. І про те, що боротьба народу проти окупації та колонізації його земель не є злочином - вона є необхідним елементом становлення будь-якої нації, і польська нація також через це неодноразово проходила. Росіяни вважають терористами польських героїв, які боролися за визволення польських земель з-під окупації. Поляки вважають терористами українських героїв, які боролися за визволення українських земель. Це природно. Окупанту ніколи не подобається, коли поневолені народи починають боротися проти нього. Але думки окупанта ніхто не питає. Для того щоб нарешті залишити минуле в минулому і почати будувати спільне майбутнє в цивілізованому світі, нам треба відверто все це проговорити. Це буде боляче, сумно й гірко, але через це треба пройти, щоб рухатися далі без ресентименту. І ми звісно маємо покаятися за злочини, які наші предки скоювали одне проти одного. Але цей процес каяття не може бути одностороннім. Якщо ви хочете, щоб каялися тільки ми, а ви робили вигляд що польська окупаційна адміністрація все робила правильно - тоді ви підете під три чорти і цикл ресентименту продовжиться з обох боків. Ми готові визнати провину наших предків. Ми робимо це регулярно протягом останніх десятиліть. Тепер ваша черга. Поляки мають однозначно засудити польську окупацію українських земель та злочини польською окупаційної адміністрації проти українського народу. Тоді і лише тоді це буде сприйматися як реальне бажання примирення між народами. Але поки поляки ставлять себе у позицію жертви, не визнаючи власної відповідальності за десятиліття системною політики по знищенню української нації на окупованих Польщею землях - побудувати справжній діалог не вдасться. Бо ми визнаємо свої власні гріхи. Але час і вам визнати ваші. І допоки це не станеться - можете залишити свої ордени собі.

The Lessons I Learned from My Dad I am not the man my father is. I am trying. Some days closer. Some days farther. He never sat me down and explained these lessons. He lived them. I’m still learning them. Show up. The kitchen table. The hospital room. The funeral. The picket line. The call from the son who won’t answer. Show up. Most days that’s the whole job. My whole life I watched him do it. Not for cameras. Not for headlines. Not because there was something in it for him. He showed up because someone needed him. I learned that grief doesn’t make you special. My father buried a wife and daughter. He buried a son. Yet he never treated grief as a claim on other people’s sympathy. Instead, it made him notice theirs. A mother who lost a child. A father sitting beside a hospital bed. A kid scared about what comes next. A son who lost his mother, his sister, his brother. He always noticed. I learned that power is not the point. The people who chase power eventually confuse the office with themselves. My father never did. Whether he was a county councilman, a senator, vice president, or president, he was the same man. The title changed. He didn’t. I learned that family comes first. The train from Wilmington wasn’t symbolism. It was every night. He read to us. Showed up to games. Sat through hospital rooms. Waited up for children who were lost. And when the day came that the country and the family could not both have him at full strength, he chose family. He relinquished the last chapter of how he wanted to be remembered. And he never complained about it. Most of all, I learned that love is not soft. Love is discipline. Love is showing up at one in the morning when nobody is watching. Love is answering the phone. Love is staying. Love is getting back up after life knocks you down and doing it all again tomorrow. That love saved my life. I’ve failed at many of these lessons, sometimes in very public ways. He loved me anyway. That’s the last lesson. I am not trying to become my father. I am trying to carry what he gave me. And if I can do that, even imperfectly, that will be enough. Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I love you.

Yesterday, the President of Poland noted that the Order of the White Eagle is not an ordinary award. It is a symbol of the highest trust of the Republic of Poland. It signifies a special bond with the Polish state and the special gratitude of the Polish People. Such a symbol requires not only merit, but also respect for the values that form the foundation of our community. Therefore, if it is considered that this special symbol may remain with Catherine II, Benito Mussolini, and Gerhard Schröder, then we in Ukraine will not argue with that. Ukraine is grateful to the Polish People for their support and cooperation, which play a significant role in the struggle for our and your independence from Russia. Ukraine never forgets solidarity and understands that cooperation between states and peoples in our region is one of the tangible security guarantees for Ukrainians and for each neighboring state. Ukraine will continue to defend itself in this war unleashed by Russia, and we will undoubtedly achieve a dignified peace. Ukraine is grateful to all peoples, states, and leaders who will continue to stand with us in the defense of freedom and who, together with Ukraine, will serve as guarantors of postwar peace in Europe and a new, real security. Ukraine will remain open to all meaningful formats of engagement with Poland in order to try to avoid conflicting interpretations of the difficult and painful chapters of our shared past and to ensure proper respect for all innocent victims of the 20th century. And Ukrainians are doing everything in our power to ensure that Europe does not suffer defeat in this century. I am proud of our people and of EVERY Ukrainian warrior – of the millions of Ukrainian men and women who deserve unquestionable respect for the heroism the Ukrainian People have shown in defending themselves against Russian aggression. We believed that the Order of the White Eagle, awarded in 2023, was meant for the Ukrainian People and our army. That is what was said at the time. Today, I sent the Order back to the President of Poland. I believe the future will confirm the respect Ukrainians deserve. Glory to Ukraine!
