Africa has a continental plan for sickle cell disease. The priority now is financing and delivery at scale. At #UNGA81 in New York, Africa CDC joined the “From Burden to Breakthrough: Financing Africa’s Imara Framework for Sickle Cell Disease” roundtable, bringing together governments, financiers, technical partners, the private sector and patient organisations. Around 300,000–400,000 babies are born with sickle cell disease in Africa every year. Earlier this year, representatives from 50 African Union Member States validated the Africa CDC Continental Plan for Sickle Cell Disease and Other Inherited Blood Disorders, establishing a shared direction for early diagnosis, integrated care, access to treatment, stronger blood services, data, research and sustainable financing. The next step is country-led implementation, backed by investment that strengthens national health systems and supports people throughout the continuum of care. “Africa has the plan. They agreed on the importance of translating shared political commitments into measurable results, building on the work already undertaken and ensuring that the 7th AU–UN High-Level Strategic Dialogue (HLSD) is focused on strategic decisions and concrete outcomes. On the margins of #UNGA81, I held a productive meeting with Ms. Catherine Pollard, UN Under-Secretary-General for Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance @UN_MgmtStrategy, on strengthening cooperation between the @_AfricanUnion and @UN on institutional management and reform. Our meeting comes at an important moment for both institutions. As @_AfricanUnion and @UN advance their respective reform processes, we have an opportunity to learn from each other and strengthen the systems, people and institutional capacities that underpin effective delivery. We discussed practical cooperation in areas including budget and human resources management, oversight, compliance and staff capacity-building. I underscored the importance of translating the AU–UN strategic partnership into deeper institutional cooperation, with clear areas of work and mechanisms to support implementation and track progress. At the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the Coordination Committee of the #Africa-#Arab Partnership, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf underscored the need to revitalise the partnership and move decisively from declarations to implementation. With 2027 marking the 50th anniversary of the partnership, he said it's timely opportunity to take stock of the achievements, address outstanding challenges & give the cooperation renewed strategic & practical momentum. Chairperson Youssouf @ymahmoudali highlighted the need to finalise the Joint Africa-Arab Action Plan, establish clear timelines for priority projects & beneficiaries, & develop sustainable financing mechanisms capable of translating political commitments into tangible results. He emphasised that the partnership must deliver concrete benefits for our peoples, including through expanded trade & investment, infrastructure development, peace & security, food security, & cultural and knowledge exchange. The Chairperson met with the Foreign Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe Dr. Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz on Thursday September 24th on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. #UNGA81 The Chair @ymahmoudali and the Foreign Minister exchanged on several issues affecting São Tomé. They discussed climate change and the upcoming parliamentary elections in São Tomé. The Foreign Minister noted that insular island states, like São Tomé and Príncipe, are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels brought on by climate change. The Chairperson committed the full support of the African Union Commission in helping São Tomé overcome its unique challenges. He stated that the programmes and resources of the Union’s specialized agencies are under utilized by the island nation, and that the expertise of the Union would be made available to the government of São Tomé.
