Another upward price revision and still no FIDs on the projects the entire 2032 balance depends on. What incentive price does it actually take, and how many years of permitting follow before first production?

Same dynamic here. Two decades and well over €200bn in EEG subsidies bought capacity that contributes nothing in a multi-day Dunkelflaute. What would EU climate policy look like if that budget had gone to firm capacity, grid, and heat resilience?

Wieder hinten an. Wann diskutiert hier endlich Fernwärme-Reaktoren?

"Britain is now the global leader in energy costs, with among the most expensive energy in the developed world. No amount of tinkering with bills will change these costs. A temporary VAT cut, some public money into a new Great British Grid and switching some subsidies from customers to taxpayers does not alter the costs. Nor do industrial energy subsidies. Rearranging the deckchairs will not make these high costs go away. They are locked in through to the end of the 2030s." @Dieter_Helm #CostOfNetZero

Unsere Unternehmen brauchen Entlastung statt Druck. Kosten senken, Standort retten! Highest since 2011, while generation output is below 1990 levels despite 200+ GW of wind and solar. An economy paying ~€87/MWh against ~€22/MWh in France loses exactly the industries that employ people. The mechanism is undisputed.
Good Morning from Germany, where even the seasonally adj unemployment count has now breached 3 million. It rose to 3.012 million in Sep from exactly 3 million in Aug; the highest since 2011. The deterioration in the labor market is more than seasonal.

Coal has overtaken gas in Bangladesh - because it’s cheaper. Asian LNG prices have more than doubled since February, soaring from around $11 to over $25. Coal costs the equivalent of just $5–6.50. Developing countries need reliable power, but above all they need energy they can afford. When energy gets expensive, Net Zero ambitions meet economic reality. #CostOfNetZero

Same pattern here in Germany. High gas prices shut down fertilizer production and farm margins with it, and the policy response treated that as an acceptable side effect. Resilience never shows up in the cost accounting.
Net Zero by stealth is working nicely! Make farming progressively less viable, suppress investment in the productive base, and the 38% reduction in cattle and sheep numbers required by Carbon Budget 7 becomes that much easier to achieve. Still, look on the bright side. At least there will be fewer “far-right extremists” roaming the countryside with their Labradors and drinking ale. 😎

The GW figures hide the key variable: duration. 100 GW at 1h does little for a multi-day Dunkelflaute. Do the NEP scenario frameworks even specify assumed storage duration, or only power capacity?
Chart of the future large-scale battery capacity of Germany according to the consecutive NEP (Netzentwicklungsplan or Network Development Plan) from NEP 2019 to the draft NEP 2027. Interesting to see the extreme differences between the planned capacity.

Andy Burnham’s drive to “buy British” when upgrading the power network that supplies every home could push up household energy bills, ministers have admitted. Burnham will announce plans to bring down energy costs by introducing a new publicly owned body – Great British Grid. Burnham will say: “Within 10 years, I want our energy costs to be in line with other nations in Europe." What could possibly go wrong? #CostOfNetZero

From 18 refineries to four. Same logic as in power generation: close domestic capacity, treat imports as a substitute. Now purchase limits and a 50mph cap are on the table, with 42 days of diesel left. Impressive planning.
Petroleum Products, Diesel: The UK's refining capacity has fallen to four plants following a second unplanned closure. Since the early 1970s, the number of British refineries has fallen from 18 to four... 🇬🇧🛢️

PDVSA is the clearest case: output fell from ~3.5M bpd to under 1M bpd after expropriations and political staffing gutted operational competence. The world's largest oil reserves and a state that cannot run them. Endowment is not a strategy.
Before it was crippled by decades of state intervention, price controls, and expropriations, Venezuela was one of the richest countries in Latin America. Today its per capita income is comparable to Bolivia's—long among the region’s poorest—while Chile took the lead via free markets and strong property rights.

Good Morning from Germany, where a funded pension revolution is about to begin just as the country’s weight in global equity markets sinks towards a record low. German stocks account for just 1.8% of global market cap, down from 4.2% in 2008. Quite a starting point.
