🚨 BREAKING: F1TV commentary bias exposed by the numbers. (This is a long 🧵) I went through the full Azerbaijan GP qualifying transcript from F1TV’s Alex Jaques and Jolyon Palmer to see whether their disproportionate focus on Max Verstappen is actually measurable, rather than just something that feels obvious while watching. The result is, unsurprisingly, pretty striking. 👀 Final qualifying order: P1 Russell P2 Leclerc P3 Piastri P4 Hadjar P5 Norris P6 Hamilton P7 Gasly P8 Verstappen Now compare that with the number of times each driver was referenced: Russell — 92 Verstappen — 88 Hadjar — 57 Norris — 48 Gasly — 40 Colapinto — 33 Hamilton — 31 Piastri — 29 Leclerc — 27 Sainz — 13 So Verstappen, who qualified P8, was mentioned almost as often as the driver who took pole and substantially more than every other driver in the top 10. But raw mentions aren't even the most interesting part. I classified the commentary into four types: • simple position/list callouts • neutral on-track updates • narrative/character commentary • incidents/mistakes This is where the difference becomes much harder to ignore. Hamilton, P6: 0 narrative mentions Norris, P5: 3 Gasly, P7: 5 Verstappen, P8: 18 Hamilton's commentary was almost entirely things like “Hamilton goes fifth”, sector times, position updates, etc. With Verstappen the commentary repeatedly became a storyline: “Is this Verstappen's chance?” “Max Verstappen with much loftier aspirations.” “Such a good battle between Russell and Verstappen.” “Phenomenal job from Verstappen to be that quick.” “...a driver we expected to contend for pole position.” And after he qualified eighth: “Verstappen mysterious at the end…” There was even an extended Russell-v-Verstappen comparison before Q3, effectively framing qualifying as a battle between those two, despite several other drivers ultimately qualifying ahead of Max. Breaking the transcript down by session makes it even more obvious. In Q1, Max's coverage was relatively normal and mostly related to what was happening on track. In Q2, however, he became the most-referenced driver, and the commentary repeatedly returned to a Russell-v-Verstappen pole narrative. In Q3, Russell understandably dominated the commentary because he produced an extraordinary pole lap. But Verstappen still received far more attention than most of the drivers who actually beat him. And this is the distinction that matters: I'm not claiming every Verstappen mention is unnecessary. He topped FP3, had genuine pace during parts of qualifying, had setup complaints, and for a while looked capable of challenging Russell. Those are legitimate reasons to talk about him. The interesting part is how differently that material is treated editorially. Other drivers get lap times and position updates. Max repeatedly gets expectation-setting, rivalry framing, historical context, rhetorical questions, praise and extended discussion. The clearest comparison is Hamilton. Hamilton qualified two places ahead of Verstappen. Hamilton: 31 total mentions, 0 narrative/character mentions. Verstappen: 88 total mentions, 18 narrative/character mentions. And Verstappen alone received more narrative commentary than Hamilton, Norris and Gasly combined, despite all three qualifying ahead of him. So when people say it sometimes feels as though the broadcast is constantly trying to pull Max into the story, even when other drivers are actually producing the result... There is at least some measurable evidence behind that feeling. The commentary didn't merely report Verstappen. It repeatedly built the session around him. And the Belgian kid finished P8. @F1 please get rid of these amateur commentators. The bias is through the roof. Max doesn’t just benefit from help on track, he gets the full PR treatment in the commentary box for years. They constantly build narratives around him, manufacture “battles” and expectations, and keep dragging him back into the story while other drivers actually producing the results barely get more than a position update. At this point it stops sounding like race commentary and starts sounding like brand management.
