It’s crazy how when one black man commits a horrible act, he’s representative of deeper core issues around black masculinity. But when a black man is silenced and repressed for honoring the humanity of others, it’s never connected to the political traditions of black nationalism and humanism black men in America pioneered hundreds of years ago.
Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was told by an NFL official to remove the name of Wafaa Akila, an 8-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza, from his eye black during the Texans’ Week 2 game or he would not be allowed to continue playing, according to a league source.
According to Reuters, Wafaa Akila was killed earlier this month by an Israeli airstrike.
