Exactly 49 years ago today, the Grinch left Christmas behind and went full Halloween mode. Written by Dr. Seuss himself and directed by Gerard Baldwin (DePatie-Freleng Enterprises), this 26-minute animated special is a darker, spookier companion to the 1966 Christmas classic. With Boris Karloff gone, Hans Conried took over as the voice of the Grinch and narrator, while Thurl Ravenscroft returned to sing. The music and songs came from Sesame Street composer Joe Raposo, giving the whole thing that unmistakable late-’70s children’s TV energy mixed with genuine unease. The story kicks off when a sour-sweet wind blows through Whoville, signaling that Grinch Night has arrived.
