Did you know for nearly 40 years from 1378 to 1417 there were 2 different Popes and eventually 3 reigning at the same time. Each Pope claiming to be successor of Peter, the Vicar of Christ at the same time.
The College of Cardinals elected Pope Urban VI in Rome, regretted their decision a few months later, and elected Pope Clement VII.
The same cardinals who claimed to be guided by the Holy Spirit in April claimed that election was invalid by September.
This Papal circus had nothing to do with theology but with geopolitics. Kings picked their pope based on military alliances in the Hundred Years' War. England and the Holy Roman Empire backed Rome. France and Scotland backed Avignon.
When Roman Catholic leaders tried to fix the disaster at the Council of Pisa in 1409, they made it worse. They deposed both men, elected a third pope, and watched as neither of the first two Popes stood down.
The Roman Catholic Religion now had three simultaneous popes, each collecting tithes, running rival bureaucracies, and hurling anathemas at the other two.
The Papal joke of a circus did not end through divine revelation, prayer, or humility.
It ended because a secular monarch, Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund, used imperial pressure to facilitate the Council of Constance in 1414.
The council deposed the two popes, the third voluntarily abdicated himself through a proxy and the council installed an Italian nobleman as the replacement.
You read that right, at one point a council facilitated by a secular King was Superior to the office of Papacy in the Roman Catholic Religion.
Dear Roman Catholics, an office where a secular emperor had to step in with a possible threat of an army (at least in one instance) to depose three competing pontiffs is not mandated from God, it was not established by Christ.
When the Devil tempted Jesus with worldly kingdoms Jesus rejected it, the Roman Catholic Religion desperately craves for worldly kingdoms using lies, forgeries, death and evil yet it failed miserably.
Behold the so called the "One True Church".
