I think the interesting part is that neither approach is automatically wrong. Green Lantern has always worked because he sits between the cosmic and the human. Snyder leaned heavily into the mythology and scale, while Gunn seems more interested in the person behind the ring. Personally, I think the strongest version needs both. The Lantern should feel powerful enough to belong among the universe’s biggest forces, but human enough that we actually care about the person carrying that power. The real question is whether Gunn can preserve that sense of cosmic importance without making the Corps feel too ordinary.
Zack Snyder and James Gunn have two completely different ideas of what a Green Lantern should feel like.
Snyder’s Lantern was presented almost like a cosmic warrior, intimidating, mysterious and visually powerful. Even with limited screen time, the character felt like he belonged to something far bigger than Earth.
Gunn’s approach is almost the opposite. His Lanterns feel more human, expressive and integrated into everyday superhero life. The cosmic power is still there, but the characters themselves feel less godlike.
Snyder made Green Lantern feel like a legend arriving on Earth.
Gunn makes Green Lantern feel like a person who happens to possess one of the most powerful weapons in the universe.
Which interpretation actually understands Green Lantern better?
