Remember 2014 when we were promised Unicorns & Rainbows by a nonbiological mahamanv ? We have a stadium named after him. We spent a lockdown lighting diyas on command And his birthday is now pushed as a massive national PR festival. 12 years on, we are still relying on an IT industry kickstarted in the 1980s and unleashed by the 1991 economic reforms. We failed the core promise of Make In India (manufacturing is stubbornly stuck at 15% of GDP). We failed Vocal for Local. We largely missed the China + 1 bus, losing mass manufacturing jobs to countries like Vietnam. Despite some electronics assembly wins, we don't have the mass job creation promised in 2014, leaving us mostly with religious shenanigans. Now we are sat here worried what happens if IT fails :)

A surprising number of career decisions are delayed because people are waiting for permission. Waiting for the promotion before acting like a leader. Waiting for the title before taking ownership. Waiting for someone to nominate them before sharing an idea. Waiting for the perfect opportunity before starting something of their own. Sometimes the opportunity genuinely needs to come from someone else. But often, there is a smaller version of the thing you want to do that you can start today. You can mentor someone without being a manager. You can improve a process without owning the department. You can write about what you're learning without being an expert. You can build something before anyone calls you a founder. Titles can recognize what you've already demonstrated. They don't have to be the permission slip for becoming that person.

Notifications, infinite feeds, short-form videos, recommendations and autoplay transformed our relationship with attention. Our environment went from occasionally giving us something interesting to constantly offering us something interesting.
