BREAKING: 🇷🇴 A major Romanian rescue operation is underway in the Black Sea after the cargo ship ROYAD MAMMADOV was reportedly hit by a drone and caught fire around 20 nautical miles off Romania’s coast, near the Pescăruș oil platform.
Romania’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Constanța was alerted at around 11:00 and immediately requested a search-and-rescue response.
According to the Romanian Naval Authority, the ship’s captain was injured and 13 crew members are currently missing.
Several rescue vessels have been dispatched to the area, including SAR APOLLO, which departed Sulina, SAR ARTEMIS, which left Constanța, and SAR ARES. A Romanian Coast Guard vessel has also been involved in the response.
The vessel, ROYAD MAMMADOV, is a general cargo ship built in 2006 and currently sailing under the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It departed Izmail, Ukraine, on September 18, bound for Ravenna, Italy.
The reported incident occurred outside Romania’s territorial waters, but Romanian authorities are leading the immediate search-and-rescue response because of the vessel’s proximity to the Romanian coast.
