Horse racing. Still.

If your behaviour (FOBT proliferation in poor areas, high FOBT live spin limits, chasing whales, preference of gaming vs gambling, profit over-optimisation) leads to intervention, these actions, rather than the predictable incompetence of the legislative class, kill the game.

This is perverse, as risk is more obvious, in fashion and growing. But the British gambling sector has blown it. Plays in markets, stocks, ETFs, crypto, even foreign exchanges, gain traction and understanding globally. There is a great dissussion about risk in society to be had

But it will not happen in Britain. People's pensions will still be riding on markets, commodities, currencies, but the population remains strangely removed. 'Gambling' is somehow separated from 'risk', and is now a dirty word, and that can only be the fault of the industry.

Rough chance of a horse falling in a hurdles race is 1 in 50 (actually more like 1 in 56 but let's keep it simple). The chances of a horse randomly falling in any 3 out of 4 hurdles starts is more than one in 30,000. Lovely Conny had a uniquely serious jumping issue. Great call

It is very easy to argue no horse with consecutive hurdles falls should be allowed to run over hurdles again (again, this is fortunately extremely rare). For anyone to seriously argue the highest profile horse in the land should risk it on the biggest stage, pretty wild.

The fact this hasn't been called off yet shows a complete misunderstanding of tail risk

Idiot clerk of the course says no risk. Absolutely remarkable. Wouldn't mind a betting shop full of them etc

One of the unexpected second order affects of asking novice hurdlers to have five runs before running in Fez handicaps seems to be making them run around a collapsed drain in the dark at the behest of connections

One more AW maiden placing, one step closer to the AW Horse Of The Year title, what a chisel this could turn in to

A significant factor in Luton's relegation was their stubborn loyalty to a completely shot-to-bits Rob Edwards, refusing to sack him after he effectively gave up in November. Good to know he'd have walked out given any half-decent off from elsewhere! #prayforwolves

Is there a legitimate argument for online gaming to exist, beyond shill-driven pseudo-Libertarian nonsense? It seems to me to exist solely as a particularly cynical wealth transferal scheme, but interested in alternative views
