Delhi Police has a weird habit. First, they detain you and deny you access to lawyers the entire time. They don’t tell you or anyone where you are being taken to. Then, at 3:30 in the morning, they suddenly show up with arrest papers and finally call your lawyer at 4 AM! This has happened to me twice now. Ye 3:30 AM ko aisa kaunsa shubh muhurat hota hai, Delhi Police?

Ashu and Saurav have been sent to 5 days judicial custody. Their fault? Unfurling tricolour at Jantar Mantar. Show some guts, @narendramodi. If you’re so determined to crush dissent, have the courage to officially declare an Emergency instead of hiding behind these cowardly tactics.

When CJP was granted permission to protest, many were quick to float conspiracy theories that we were planted by the BJP. Yesterday, the INDIA bloc held a massive protest, but there was no crackdown like the one we witnessed on October 10. This is exactly how the govt plays us against each other. By treating different protests differently, they create suspicion and mistrust among people who are ultimately fighting for the same cause. My only request to everyone is to see through these tactics. Today, they may allow one protest and crush another. Tomorrow, they could reverse the roles. The idea is to keep us doubting each other instead of questioning those in power. Don’t let conspiracy theories divide us. Don’t fall into the trap of fighting among ourselves when we should be standing together. The fight is against Gyanesh Kumar and those protecting him. Don’t lose sight of that.

Today, Modi denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site. Tomorrow, he will denotify democracy itself. The dictator’s problem was never the protest site. It was the very idea of people protesting.

Why did you delete the part where I was asking for my phone so I could retrieve my cousin’s number? And where I was asking to let me speak to my lawyers? The same Delhi Police which is now taking the moral high ground for informing me about my grandmother’s demise and offering me a ride home came to me at 3:30 in the morning with arrest papers, demanding that I sign them. Where did all that humanity go at 3:30 AM? Despite knowing that I had just lost my grandmother, they still insisted that I sign the arrest papers. I refused until I was allowed to speak to my lawyers.

Thanks for teaching today’s youngsters many of the same lessons, Modiji!
Personally, the Emergency brings back many memories. As youngsters, we learnt a lot during the anti-Emergency movement.

Filled form-7 targetting Muslim voters in Karnataka. - The Hindu report. BLOs told The Hindu that two men claiming to represent the Belagavi City Corporation brought the bulk forms and urged them to sign quickly. Some BLOs said they signed under pressure, others refused or tried to reach supervisors. The men allegedly called someone posing as the ERO to tell the BLOs to sign. The ERO said his name had been used without his authorisation and that he gave no such instruction. When some of the objectors whose details were on the forms were contacted, they confirmed that the names and phone numbers were theirs, but said they had not filled out the applications against anyone. Deletion requests of Muslim voters in Balki constituency even after deadline of September 23. The Form-10 report shows 1,131 applications were received between September 24 and 29, of which 1,123 were bulk filings. Report by @rishitaakhanna thehindu.com/news/cities/ban…

🚨Very concerning information coming in. Both the CBI and ED are being pressured by the regime to raid close associates of the two Election Commissioners. Both of them are resisting pressure to hold a joint press conference with Gyanesh Kumar and unequivocally refute and trash the Indian Express report. The same had happened to Ashok Lavasa. His family members were sent IT notices before he was pressured to resign. This is completely unacceptable. The government has totally forgotten that this is post-Jantar Mantar India and the public cannot be fooled through such illegal and fraudulent tactics.

The Election Commission of India is under fire like never before. The SIR has struck 13 crore names off draft rolls, putting the EC at the centre of intense public debate over its role in deciding who gets to vote — and who doesn’t. HOWEVER, what nobody knew: through that same period, some of the sharpest questions were being asked from inside. Out today, after months of work. Our #ExpressInvestigation 🧵 (1/10)
