On 9/11/2001 I was walking home from my first morning class of the day at Purdue University in Indiana. I was listening to music on my iPod, oblivious to what was happening , and remember looking up at the sky and thinking about how blue and cloudless it was.
Soon after I got home to my apartment the landline phone rang. It was my sister and she told me to turn the TV on because a plane had crashed into the WTC. Then we all saw the second plane hit the other tower. When the towers fell LIVE on TV it was the most shocking thing I’ve ever seen. I remember thinking 30,000 people must’ve died.
Hearing about the Pentagon attack made things even scarier. A full on attack on the country. And my brother also works in D.C.
Some of roommate’s and neighbors were in a panic, and we all made a rush to get gas in our cars before there was a shortage or gas prices exploded.
One of my neighbors said a name that I had never heard of before, and that he was likely the mastermind - Osama Bin Laden.
The world changed dramatically that day but despite living in a pre-911 world, the one thing I never experienced before 911 was air travel. I didn’t get on my first airplane until 2002.
