I’ve seen a lot of talk about suicide this weekend, and a lot of “call a hotline”. Which is absolutely one good solution. But as someone who has been down this road many times myself, I know it’s not that simple. So here’s a thread for folks struggling with suicidal thoughts:
My friend Abby is an absolute badass. The work she has done in both big and small ways to help victims of awful sexual abuse is beyond inspiring.

Going public again for the first time in years to relive this memory is probably not the BEST way to spend my Monday, but I’ve reached my limit with seeing people say that things like this don’t really happen.
Same. A lot of people are responding to me as if I believe the current justice system is good, it's not (that's what this happened under!) we just can't treat "community" like the holy grail of justice
I used to like the idea of a "community-based" justice system before I met a teenage girl who was being raped by her stepdad. Her neighbors banded together to tell her not to report him. Later, after she did report him, they showed up in court to support him.
In general in abortion rights we abandon third trimester patients. But we can't. For any of the reasons someone might need an abortion passed 12 or 22 weeks, we have to be there for them. This includes little girls who are rape victims and survivors of incest.
You know what altered my brain chemistry? A few years ago, a neighbor posted begging people to stop the fireworks. They pop off randomly til 1 or 2am and will for days. Her husband was a veteran struggling with PTSD. And people bullied her for it.
She didn't ask for

“Nicole Simpson was living in her own home when she was murdered. Her divorce had been finalized in 1992. Whether or not her ex-husband committed the murder, he did continue to assault her, threaten her, stalk her, intimidate her.” Nothing is funny about OJ Simpson & what he did
Domestic violence is a kind of small-scale terrorism. What OJ Simpson did to Nicole Brown Simpson was not the event of one night—it was a years long campaign that thousands of women suffer at other men’s hands. Read Andrea Dworkin’s memorial to Nicole: evergreenreview.com/read/in-…

A 57-year-old man is accused of drugging three 12-year-old girls with sedative-laced smoothies during his daughter’s sleepover at his Oregon home, court records show
oregonlive.com/clackamascoun…
Noemi was often on the losing end of their on-going custody battle. Court documents show he always had a very stable and high-paying job doing auto body work at LeMettry's. They shared custody but the judge ordered the kids to stay with Shannon Gooden about 2/3 of the time.
I had an incredible interview today with Noemi Torres -- the ex-girlfriend of the Burnsville police murderer Shannon Gooden. Torres says during their abusive relationship, Gooden would claim he'd shoot police if she called 911 on him.
I’ve lost count of how many survivors I know who tried and failed to take action against their abuser for something that the system saw as “small” - usually domestic abuse - and then their abuser kept escalating until someone died. It’s a very old story, and nothing ever changes.
Based on what we know now:
-No new gun law would have prevented Burnsville
-No tough-on-crime policy would have this guy locked up still
-We don’t do enough to protect abuse victims.
Agree? Disagree? Now what?

Could it be that there’s a ubiquitous form of violence that is overwhelmingly committed against women and girls, the healing from which is inhibited by stigma, victim blaming, and widespread social indifference to or support for perpetrators? No; it’s that women have bad brains.
PTSD is twice as prevalent in women as in men and researchers are not sure why. Recent studies have however shed light on how estrogen and hormonal cycles can influence PTSD.
