Al-Aʿmash said:
“The ink on the clothes of a student of ḥadīth is better than perfume on the clothes of a bride.”
وَقَالَ الأَعْمَش
الْحِبْرُ فِي ثِيَابِ صَاحِبِ الْحَدِيثِ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ الْخَلُوقِ فِي ثِيَاب الْعَرُوسِ
A man was asked: “How did you acquire all this vast knowledge?”
He replied:
“By rising as early as a raven, being as eager as a pig, and having the patience of a donkey.”
“Love righteousness, you rulers of the earth;
think of the Lord in goodness
and seek him with sincerity of heart,
because wisdom will not enter a deceitful soul
or dwell in a body enslaved to sin.”

It was said to Ibn al-Mubārak: “How long will you continue writing down ḥadīth?”
He replied: “Perhaps the very statement that will benefit me is one I have not heard yet.”
One of the early sages said:
“Knowledge is perfected only through six things: a penetrating mind, a long period of time, sufficient means, abundant study, a skilled teacher, and desire. Whenever any one of these six is lacking, knowledge is diminished accordingly.”

Al-Jāḥiẓ said:
