Wayne Rooney has publicly revealed that his maternal grandmother was Jewish. Which, given that Jewish identity is traditionally determined through the maternal line, could mean he’s Jewish too. At a time of spiralling antisemitism, he could easily have kept this to himself. Yet - crazy though it is that acknowledging your Jewish heritage should require courage- he chose to tell the world. This suggests two things: 1He’s a mensch. 2The Jewish instinct to overshare may well be in his DNA. #waynerooney

Just finished reading this riveting biography by @PNormanWriter of legendary Beatles manager Brian Epstein. Astonishing that he was ignored by the establishment, despite discovering the Fab Four and helping to bring their extraordinary talent to the world. Not least in failure to award him an MBE when the Beatles received theirs. Surely it’s time to recognise his contribution with a posthumous honour? #Beatles

Again? And in Manchester. What is the Prime Minister - so vocal about his northern roots and former Mayor of the city - going to do about the persistent threat facing British Jews in Manchester and across the UK? We don’t need higher walls and more guards, all of which comes at a cost to the taxpayer. We need the radicalised source of this threat rooted out. So grateful to the police for their work here, but something must be done for the sake of all our security.

Once again, we owe an enormous debt of gratitude to @TerrorismPolice, @gmpolice, the security services and @CST_UK. Were it not for their vigilance, professionalism and dedication, the consequences of this alleged plot could have been devastating. Our community needs no further reminders of the dangerous reality in which we now live. But news like this only reinforces our determination to ensure that fear will never define us. We will continue to worship, celebrate and contribute to our country with gratitude and confidence.

Having spent a very moving Yom Kippur in Heaton Park, marking the first anniversary of the deadly terrorist attack on the Manchester synagogue, it is truly heartbreaking to learn of another attack outside a synagogue in Ontario, Canada. We pray for the police officer who was seriously injured while protecting Jewish congregants, and salute his courage. We also mourn the loss of Netanel Chkroun z”l, who was murdered in a terrorist attack in Samaria on the eve of Yom Kippur. Across continents, these events are a painful reminder that, tragically, the freedom for Jews to gather, pray and live in safety can never be taken for granted.

A year after the atrocity at Heaton Park Synagogue, I returned this evening for the conclusion of the Yom Kippur service, led by the @chiefrabbi A massive police presence was a stark reminder, as if one were needed, of the murderous attack by a jihadi terrorist 12 months ago , in which two Jewish men were killed and others grievously injured. Yet, inside thanks to the words of the peerless Rabbi Daniel Walker and heartfelt prayers and beautiful songs led by the Chief Rabbi, there was only warmth and resilience. Proof that one year on the spirit of our community remains unbroken. And that evil will never prevail. #YomKippour

With Yom Kippur approaching this Sunday, and one year since the horrific attack at my family’s synagogue in Manchester, I wrote this reflective piece for @JewishChron - spanning innocent childhood memories to the hideous atrocity which took place there. Yet our community remains unbowed and its spirit unbroken. To those fasting this Sunday I hope it’s a meaningful one and a peaceful weekend to all #yomkippur
