Elon Musk is currently living in an Airstream trailer in Memphis, Tennessee, while he personally oversees a huge AI infrastructure project. The company behind the project is xAI, Musk’s artificial-intelligence company, which was acquired by SpaceX earlier this year. The Memphis operation centers around Colossus, a massive supercomputer facility designed to provide the computing power needed to train and run Musk’s AI model, Grok. What strikes me about the story is how unusual it is: Musk could obviously stay in a luxury home, but he says he is living practically next to the construction site so he can be directly involved. He has jokingly called the Airstream his palace. His SpaceX president, Gwynne Shotwell, has also described him as someone who will sleep near a project when he is deeply involved in building it. Whether you admire Musk or not, there is something striking about seeing him trade a mansion for an Airstream because he wants to be steps away from the machines and people building his next big venture. And what he is building in Tennessee is essentially the computing backbone for his AI ambitions—a giant data center and supercomputing operation intended to make Grok and future AI systems much more powerful. #ElonMusk
