#Hughesy coughed up the tax-deductible $3,000 for charity Blue Knot after losing a bet with
@aaronsmith.
And
@DHughesy is already getting mileage from it. But here's the kicker:
_______________________
Dear Dave,
This is a really important concept for you to grasp. It may take a while to sink in, but let's try.
🤞 Fingers crossed this doesn't go over your head.
Oh, FUCK. I mentioned the head. I promised myself I wasn't going there.
Anyway.
First, let's acknowledge your $3,000 donation to Blue Knot.
Good.
Genuinely good.
But let's not immediately begin polishing the halo for
#BrandHughesy.
You didn't wake up one morning, overcome by a spontaneous desire to support a local charity, and think:
"You know what? Blue Knot could really use $3,000. Better fix that."
No.
You got into a bet with Aaron after accusing him of effectively being a Labor cheerleader who never criticised Labor.
Aaron said: prove it.
You couldn't.
Then $100 for every example criticising Labor, donated to charity.
You agreed.
Aaron produced 30.
Thirty.
So you paid $3,000.
A deal's a deal, and to your credit, you honoured it.
But then came the spin:
"I gladly donated 3k to Blue Knot. A local charity looking after local people."
Lovely.
Now, perhaps you had donated to Blue Knot before. We couldn't find any reference to it. Maybe you have. That's not really the point.
The point is that, once again, you have taken an event in which you were demonstrably wrong, extracted the one part that makes you look good, and presented the story as though the central takeaway is:
DAVE HUGHES: LOCAL CHARITY MAN. See Robin Hood clip, link below.
No, Hughesy.
The central takeaway is that you accused Aaron of something, couldn't substantiate it, set the price of being wrong at $100 a post, and then discovered Aaron had more examples than you had anticipated.
That's how Blue Knot got $3,000.
And, by the way, if the donation is tax deductible and you claim it, thank Jim Chalmers for preserving the deduction you can claim against your taxable income.
Go on, Dave.
Say thanks.
But here's the really important bit. The bit you still don't seem to understand.
Aaron is not obliged to write positive things about the
#Liberal Party,
#OneNation, or anyone else, simply to satisfy your personal definition of "balance".
If Aaron examines something you say and concludes it's wrong, he can say it's wrong.
If he examines a Labor government and concludes it's wrong, he can say it's wrong.
And he has.
Thirty times, at least, according to the price tag you agreed to yourself.
That does not make him biased.
It means he writes about what he wants to write about.
Which is rather interesting coming from you.
Because, Dave, we have noticed something.
You spend an extraordinary amount of time attacking Labor.
Post after post.
Rant after rant.
And somehow we don't recall you applying the same rigorous standard to yourself:
"Hang on. I've criticised Labor again. Better immediately find something nasty to say about the Coalition, otherwise people might think I'm biased."
Nope.
Apparently Aaron must meet the
#Hughesy Balance Quota™, while Dave Hughes is free to spend his days berating Labor, attacking its ministers, defending Coalition figures and now appearing at Liberal Party campaign events.
But Aaron, correcting your factual errors?
BIAS.
Aaron not writing enough anti-Labor posts for your liking?
BIAS.
Aaron asking you to provide evidence after you call a government crooked?
ASIO VAN.
Mate.
This is the kettle calling the kettle black.
I considered making a joke about your pipe being black too, but I want you to focus.
The point is painfully simple:
You are accusing Aaron of exactly the selective political behaviour you engage in yourself.
Except Aaron's posts generally involve evidence, facts and correcting claims you have made.
Yours are increasingly an exciting blend of:
𖧀 vibes;
𖧀 outrage;
𖧀 a podcast memory you may not be "sure" about;
and several paragraphs explaining why the person asking you for evidence is the real problem.
Then, when you're finally pinned down, we get:
"Let's all stay civil."
Followed by a story about Ginger having a hard wrestle in the dog park.
Mate, go back and read some of your own posts before delivering a TED Talk on civility.
Your entire strategy seems to be:
→Make a big claim.
→Get challenged.
→Fail to substantiate it.
→Change the subject.
→Move the goalposts.
→Find one tiny unrelated point that makes you look good.
→Announce that everyone should now be civil.
That's not keeping government to account.
That's spin management for Brand Hughesy.
And this is the bit that keeps escaping you:
You do not get to demand that another person manufacture criticism of a political party just to make you more comfortable with their credibility.
You also don't get to spend your own feed relentlessly bagging Labor and then point at someone else and say:
"Why aren't you bagging them as much as I think you should?"
Because that isn't a standard.
That's just hypocrisy with an iPad.
Now, your waffle may fool some people, but for those with IQs above their shoelaces, you're becoming remarkably easy to read.
So here's how to solve this enormous contradiction, Dave.
You don't have to write positive things about Labor.
Aaron doesn't have to write negative things about Labor.
Neither of you owes the other a politically balanced quota.
But when you accuse someone of bias, and they prove you wrong 30 times at $100 a pop, perhaps the adult response is not to immediately invent a new standard and pretend you were basically right all along.
It's:
"I was wrong. Sorry, Aaron."
That's it.
Five words.
And if that concept is still too difficult to digest, perhaps get Ginger to explain it to you at the tap.
Remember, Brand Hughesy: accountability is for everyone else.

Tell us again Hughesy, how you donated $3000 to Blue Knot.
How many posts are we gonna see with Dave Hughes, mentioning the tax deductible $3000? forced donation on a LOST bet?
Hi Hughesy, we will frame the receipt and put them on eBay but he is a real great thought:
You sign it, resend it, we'll fucking print it, and frame it, and sell it on eBay, or as a certified original signature, copy, and any money we raise we will give to Blue Knot.
How's that for an idea? I mean you're getting mileage out of it, so why not use it like you're using your fame and platform, and the charities benefit.
How do you like us so far?
Let's do two versions:
1/. Officially signed and witnessed as a genuine signature. ethereum:0xabec00542d141bddf58649bfe860c6449807237c
2/. For the less well off, Copy ethereum:0xabec00542d141bddf58649bfe860c6449807237c -20%
Maybe we could do a deluxe version, I have a photograph of you fucking holding it with the person signing as a witness to prove its fucking genuine, and will charge ethereum:0xabec00542d141bddf58649bfe860c6449807237c + 60%
Just give is the go ahead, we'll send the documents and we can get this gig going. MORE FOR THE CHARITIES!!!
