Before the genocide, Mervat had been diagnosed with breast cancer and last received a mammogram in April 2023, but she has not been able to access or afford further testing or a needed biopsy for a growing lump due to the collapse of medical services and financial hardship, while her father in law also requires eye surgery for fluid buildup.
