Angela Merkel, former chancellor of Germany, speaking about Vincent Kompany:
"First of all, I was incredibly sorry to hear about it. I wish him a speedy recovery, but also an environment in which he can genuinely take all the time he needs. I know a little something about needing time myself. I have enormous respect for Vincent Kompany's work, as well as his clear stance on discrimination and many other topics. I can imagine that if I were a footballer, male or female, he would be exactly the kind of coach I would want to work with.
Let me put it this way: Vincent Kompany certainly didn't choose to stay at home voluntarily. It took an incident for his body to finally say: 'Stop!' - That's exactly what happened to me, too. When I started shaking during military honours back in 2019, it was a release of tension, probably triggered by my mother's death or perhaps also by the fact that I knew I would be stepping down. That's when the body simply starts sending signals, and from a human perspective, that's actually a very, very good thing."
