The irreconcilable misunderstanding about AI is that for some of us is the way to remove suffering, inequality, limits from the human race. For others, a tool: and, right now, the capabilities are at tool level, giving the illusion that the tool is the point.

Some of you are cashing checks you don't have. There's no confusion. We all know.

I agree. As statistician, I'm a bit worried about how my profession will look in a few years. But as a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, what matters to me most is whether AI will help bring better algorithms to insulin pumps, or better software for the devices controlling them, or find a cure

We arleady have the capability to remove a huge amount of suffering yet we don't, why do you think ai would change this?

We start by using it as a tool, with the tool we facilitate everyday tasks and In the meantime we study how we can expand its use in medicine and biology to find breakthroughs (this is our way in the cardiovascular field)

Partially agree, but... Just as there’s a reason a fork hasn’t changed shape for years (it perfectly serves its purpose) LLMs will never be anything more than a commodity. LLMs will never reach AGI. The market is starting to recognize this. Still, they serve useful purposes.

Isn’t that the same thing? A tool that will, hopefully, help you achieve these bigger goals?

How do you go beyond a "tool" level capability?

Kind of a naive view that our corporate overlords would allow even a true AGI to be used to even the playing field and remove suffering.

The illusion that AI is "just a tool" is seventy years old. 😅 Heidegger called it "Gestell": technology is never the instrument, it's the way we start seeing the world while using it. Capabilities today are (still) at tool level. Not what they reconfigure , though...

I see AI mostly as a tool today, as that reflect the current reality. However I'm build Ainiux project so that it can possibly quickly grow into a network. It already has its own API (over HTTP and MCP compatible) and very versatile headless CLI tool set. The text UI, web UI and agent mode are more like user interfaces to the underlying system, where I'm going to add even more native capabilities (instead of relying on external libraries and programs) and maybe give it potentially dangerous capabilities e.g. built-in port scanner, built-in log file scanner (to find attackers), built-in network analyzer. Think it as ""everything but the kitchen sink". Ainiux already natively handles lot of formats from all the popular programming languages to HTML, JSON, CSV, PDF, Word and just added Excel, next perhaps PowerPoint (all using my own custom C++ code for speed and guardrails). The next big step is own programming language, which is designed for AI era and going massively parallel. Sadly I'm a solo developer, with zero sponsors and I won't likely have the required computational resources to do the final step: new operating system. Operating system made for AI. The current operating systems are made for humans. I do also realize testing different kind of hardware for own OS is outside what a solo developer can achieve. I think a lot of people and companies don't think big enough. And way too many are doing the same using the same tools & languages like everybody else.

Pure idiocy and copium. In reality it's all about the cash. If millions are unemployed you can't do much against suffering You are an idiot and hypocrit

I think the deepest disagreement isn't about AI's capabilities. It's about what people think technology is for.

One part of that hope I share is making useful software viable for people who could never justify paying a team to build it. Small communities have very specific needs that don't make an attractive market.

The tool framing is a function of the capability level, not a fixed worldview. Watch how many switch camps as capabilities move.

At government level I am sure they see it as the enabler for the future world. Consumers and corporates they see the tool in AI, because there is their opportunity.
