FACADE is a study in minimalism. What is the smallest amount of information that can generate an interesting artwork? Can interesting code art be generated without the use of a formal programming language?
FACADE attempts to answer these questions by using pure HTML + CSS to generate an animation resulting in an 814 byte file. FACADE generates a calming animation loop which splits the hexadecimal color FACADE into RGB channels which, when rendered as irregular overlapping shapes, reconstitute the original FACADE color.
FACADE is hexspeak - a valid hex color (FA, CA, DE all fall within 0-9/A-F) that happens to spell an English word. But "“acade"”is also exactly what the piece is about. A single, seemingly solid, color is never really one thing - it’s an illusion built from red, green, and blue light overlapping and bleeding at the edges. The technical constraint is at the core of the work, not incidental to it. CSS was never designed as a programming language and yet it provides enough complexity to choreograph a piece with real depth and rhythm.
