finally canon dumbledore in all this and it of course tugs the heartstrings
MALFOY: Sir?
DUMBLEDORE: Ah, Miss Malfoy. I wanted to ask you about Harry Potter.
MALFOY: Harry?
DUMBLEDORE: Tell me, do you love him?
MALFOY: What the heck is this? Some sort of test?
DUMBLEDORE: No. Just a question.
MALFOY: I don't know what you're talking about.
DUMBLEDORE: Oh, I think you do. I have noticed something rather interesting. You almost never use his first name.
MALFOY: Well, isn't that normal?
DUMBLEDORE: Perhaps. But you call him Potter when you're annoyed with him, when you're arguing, and when you're trying to convince yourself he's still your rival. Yet whenever you're worried about him, you call him Harry.
MALFOY: I don't.
DUMBLEDORE: You do.
MALFOY: Fine. Maybe I do.
DUMBLEDORE: And what do you see in him?
MALFOY: He's brave. Stubborn. Reckless. Annoying. He has absolutely no sense of self-preservation.
DUMBLEDORE: That does sound like Harry.
MALFOY: He's also kind. He helps people without expecting anything back. He remembers little things. And whenever I think he's finally going to give up on me, he doesn't.
DUMBLEDORE: Because he cares about you.
MALFOY: That's the problem.
DUMBLEDORE: Why is that a problem?
MALFOY: Because I care about him too.
DUMBLEDORE: There it is.
MALFOY: I love him. I just can't tell him.
DUMBLEDORE: You love him too much. You're terrified that he'll reject you, and that is why you've kept those feelings hidden.
MALFOY: I don't want him to look at me differently.
DUMBLEDORE: I understand.
DUMBLEDORE: I still remember that Valentine's Day when you almost told Harry. You stood in front of him with the words ready, but you couldn't speak.
MALFOY: I was trying.
DUMBLEDORE: I know, child. Honestly, perhaps that was for the best. Not everyone can handle rejection from the person they love most.
MALFOY: He's stupid anyway.
DUMBLEDORE: Oh?
MALFOY: He's stupid, and his green eyes only make him more stupid.
DUMBLEDORE: His eyes are responsible for his stupidity?
MALFOY: Somehow, yes.
DUMBLEDORE: Oh, dear child.
MALFOY: What?
DUMBLEDORE: You're crying.
MALFOY: I'm not crying.
DUMBLEDORE: Of course not. Here, have some tissue.
MALFOY: Thank you.
DUMBLEDORE: Perhaps soon you'll finally say the words you've been wanting to say to him.
MALFOY: Maybe.
DUMBLEDORE: Don't wait too long, Miss Malfoy. Some words become harder to say the longer they remain unspoken.
MALFOY: I know.
MALFOY: Thank you, Sir. Now I have to go.
DUMBLEDORE: Godspeed, child.
