"There are individuals on the autism spectrum that do share similar characteristics, for example, electroencephalogram (EEG) data and genetic profiles," says Abha Gupta, MD, PhD, associate professor of pediatrics (general pediatrics) and senior author of the study. "It's important to find these groups because they might require different diagnostic instruments and might have different neurobiology, which implies they might have different potential targets for treatment." #autismdiagnosis medicine.yale.edu/news-artic…

A neurocognitive electroencephalography (EEG) study led by researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem reveals that autistic and non-autistic adults achieve identical perceptual accuracy on auditory tasks, but diverge markedly in how their brains evaluate feedback and update expectations. #sensoryissues #autismresearch neurosciencenews.com/autism-…

A major new study reveals that autistic children’s brains process faces differently, and those differences may begin earlier than previously thought. Researchers found that brain signals associated with recognizing faces become more specialized as neurotypical children grow older, but show much less change in autistic children. The discovery could help explain why some autistic people have difficulty recognizing faces and reading emotions. sciencedaily.com/releases/20…

A neuroimaging and behavioral study published in The Journal of Neuroscience identifies why many autistic individuals struggle to adapt to shifting environmental demands. Researchers from Nottingham Trent University and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem discovered that autistic individuals display significantly weaker neural responses to negative feedback and reduced sensitivity to internal decision confidence. This dual blunting of external correction and internal certainty impairs dynamic behavioral updating. neurosciencenews.com/adaptio…

Federal regulators are green-lighting a new tool designed to help clinicians identify children with autism. Clinicians can upload video and audio from typical behavioral assessments to a portal. The tool measures facial expressions, voice patterns, eye gaze and more to evaluate how a child’s behavior compares to children with and without autism. The results are intended to be considered in conjunction with “other findings and professional judgment.” #autismdiagnosis disabilityscoop.com/2026/10/…

Halloween falls on Saturday this year, which means families still have time for a practice run at their own front door. Starting now gives parents of kids with autism, ADHD, or sensory differences time to address the parts that often go wrong. #autismhalloween #sensoryissues autismspectrumnews.org/pract…

The new figure is a decrease from the CDC’s previous estimate of 27 percent, published in 2023. The new estimate relies on an updated, more precise definition of profound autism that includes adaptive scores, which contributed to the drop. #profoundautism #autismdiagnosis thetransmitter.org/spectrum/…

In a study published today in Nature, researchers identified hundreds of new microexons—short gene segments that appear to play a key role in autism and other neurological conditions—and developed a machine learning approach to predict the impact of autism-associated genetic variants on the regulation of these segments. #autismgenetics medicalxpress.com/news/2026-…

A new study reveals that the wide variety of sensory experiences reported by autistic individuals corresponds to distinct patterns of information exchange in the brain. Researchers found that specific functional connections between cortical and subcortical brain regions can predict an autistic child’s sensory profile. psypost.org/brain-connectivi…

Tune in tomorrow for our free webinar, "The Immune System in Autism". This lecture will cover immune system dysregulation in individuals with autism and associations between autism severity and immune function. Autism is associated with a wide spectrum of atypical immune functions involving autophagy, innate immune activation, NK, T-cell and B-cell responses, and tolerance. At the same time, autism is associated with alteration of a variety of immune-related factors, including oxidative stress, phase-II metabolism, zinc metabolism, heavy metal metabolism, and the gut microbiome. Gut microbial metabolites, in particular, serve as effective biomarkers for autism, perhaps providing a starting point for understanding common factors underlying the spectrum disorder. In the study, one group participated in therapeutic horseback riding. Another completed horse-themed barn activities using a life-sized stuffed toy horse. The third group was placed on a waitlist and received neither activity during the study period. Children who participated in therapeutic horseback riding showed significantly greater improvement in hyperactivity than those in either comparison group. health.yahoo.com/conditions/…

America’s public education system offers some of the world's best services and protections for students with disabilities, guaranteed by federal law. But more parents are abandoning their rights to those services. They say public schools are failing their kids and they’re better off trying to educate them at home. apnews.com/projects/homescho…
