Even in a deep-blue city in a deep-blue state, politics is deeply factional along lines of race, class, and culture. My latest with @aldotoledo and @HarshaReports on S.F.'s voting blocs, and how they will shape tomorrow's mayor's race. sfchronicle.com/projects/202…

Here's what Wiener-Chan looks like right now:

Story taking shape but early insights on Chan-Wiener (Wiener ahead but not certain to win). 🧵 1. Chan doing best in precincts with best numbers for Trump

444
3. Wiener doing best in the richest areas, but leading in all income groups (very similar story for edu. levels)

4. Wiener ahead in every Supe dist except D4 (Wong, Sunset)

In SF, the "moderate" Lurie-aligned majority on the BOS will grow. Theo Ellington is all but certain to win his race in D8.

Gary McCoy also all but the inevitable winner in D8

SF results coming in. In CA-11, Wiener is ahead by a margin that looks big, but it will undoubtedly narrow.

From @DanielleEchev based on brand-new Census data: Bay Area absolutely dominates the rest of the US in EV uptake. 26% of Santa Clara Co households with a car have one. 🧵

More remarkably (but a good match for the climate): the Central Valley leads the country on household solar. A third of Bakersfield-area homes have them!

Lots already written about Chan/ Wiener's housing records. We tried to quantify it—using one esoteric and one simple measure. First, on Chan... 🧵
The Chronicle analyzed Connie Chan and Scott Wiener’s record of voting on and sponsoring bills in their respective legislative bodies. Here’s what we found. sfchronicle.com/politics/art…

The way Wiener stands out is more prosaic: He just passes tons of housing dereg bills. The most of any in the state senate.

More than almost any CA ballot prop since 2016, the No vote on Prop 60 correlated with college education.
I love democracy

GPT-6 Astra deciphered a 1918 German radio transmission that, to my knowledge, has never been deciphered before. The message below translates to: "EIN ENGLISCHER KREUZER EINLIEG X SEWASTOPOL X S4STEN X EIN GESCHWADER DER X ALLIIERTEN FOLGT 26STEN X" or, in English: "AN ENGLISH CRUISER ARRIVED AT SEVASTOPOL ON THE ?4TH AN ALLIED SQUADRON FOLLOWS ON THE 26TH" Astra even double-checked its work by determining that an English cruiser, HMS Canterbury, reported its arrival in Sevastopol on November 24, 1918 and the arrival of an allied squadron on November 26, 1918. This message is one of the ~20 WWI German radio messages that appear as one of the entries in the scienceblogs.de list of top 50 unsolved ciphers (scienceblogs.de/klausis-kryp…). A minor, but really cool result!
