PAKISTAN-BORN TAXI DRIVER JAILED AFTER SEXUALLY ASSAULTING THREE YOUNG WOMEN IN JUST THREE WEEKS
A married father-of-three who used his position as a taxi driver to sexually assault three young women has been jailed for five years.
Mansoor Uddin, 41, originally from Pakistan, targeted women aged 18, 19 and 20 during a series of attacks in Dublin.
Uddin, of Castleway, Adamstown, Lucan, pleaded guilty to the offences at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on the morning his trial was due to begin.
The first victim was a 19-year-old German woman, while two further women, aged 20 and 18, were assaulted just weeks later.
The victims showed remarkable presence of mind in helping identify their attacker. One remembered part of his registration number, another attempted to photograph his identification, while the youngest contacted a friend during her journey to pass on his name and part of his taxi number.
Gardaí subsequently used GPS records from the Hailo taxi app to establish that Uddin had travelled the routes described by all three victims.
The case sparked public outrage after it emerged that Uddin had initially been allowed to continue driving his taxi while on bail, subject to restrictions. His taxi licence was revoked following his guilty pleas.
Sentencing him, Judge Sinead Ní Chulacháin highlighted his abuse of trust as a taxi driver, the vulnerability of his victims and his refusal to stop the vehicle in two of the incidents.
Uddin was sentenced to six years in prison, with the final year suspended, leaving him facing five years behind bars.
