kinda crazy that government websites will include links to statutes that redirect to westlaw, which requires a subscription. laws should be easily accessible to the public if you want people to follow them.

A strong discussion yesterday at our Breakfast Roundtable with The Law Society of NSW. Great to hear directly from customers about how legal AI is being adopted across research, discovery, transcript review and knowledge work, and how Protégé is supporting day-to-day practice. Thank you to Peter O’Brien, Daniel Fleming and Fiona Lymant for sharing their insights, and to The Law Society of NSW for the opportunity to collaborate. #LegalAI #LegalTech #Protege

Free and anonymous access to primary legal information is a human right in a democratic society governed by the rule of law. It is a government responsibility to ensure that it makes the law available to its community. It should not be a market of goods and services for sale.

That said, the access needs to be managed and curated to balance the tension between open justice and the right to privacy. See the Montreal Declaration from the Free Access to Law Movement falm.info/declaration/

“And it’s not even hard to avoid citing AI-hallucinated cases. All you have to do is use Westlaw or Lexis to cite check the brief.” 👀 - a fish in water never realizes it’s wet. legal data is born free and everywhere it is behind paywalls.
And it’s not even hard to avoid citing AI-hallucinated cases. All you have to do is use Westlaw or Lexis to cite check the brief. It’s one of the first mechanical things you learn in a very practical writing class in law school. It takes perhaps 15 seconds per case. I’ve even … gasp … used actual books to cite check and Shepardize cases. I’ll never forget being in the courtroom in New York City at the Alvin Bragg trial of Trump when Todd Blanche exposed in cross examination that “star witness” Michael Cohen was writing briefs with hallucinated cases. Good times.

Interesting article describing how the duopoly in market for legal information in the US came about. Free access to legal information is a human right and should not be restricted to those who can afford to pay for it. This is what @austlii was created for and remains our mission
