Battle of Fulford. 20 September 1066.
Earls Morcar and Edwin of Mercia are defeated on marshy ground at Fulford by the Viking army of Harald Hardrada, joined by Harold II’s brother Tostig. Harold II marches north to deal with the Viking threat.

A Scottish raiding party under Sir James Douglas and the Earl of Moray, defeat an English army of laymen and clergy led by the Archbishop of York. The raid succeeds in relieving the siege of Berwick.

A Scottish raiding army under Archibald Douglas are defeated by English forces commanded by Henry ‘Hotspur’ Percy and George Dunbar whose longbowmen made a major contribution to the victory.

Battle of Wigan Lane - 25 August 1651
The Earl of Derby, recruiting troops from Lancashire to aid King Charles II, was intercepted by Col Robert Lilbourne.
Despite a strong position, the earl was defeated & Thomas Tyldesley killed. Just 50 royalists joined the king at Worcester.

Battle of Bosworth. 22 August 1485
Richard III, King of England, was defeated and slain at Bosworth by an army under the command of Henry Tudor. The correct location of the battle, in a theory by Peter Foss, was discovered during a project led by the Battlefields Trust in 2009.

Skirmish at Tarvin. 21 August 1644
Sir Willaim Brereton, sending a combined force of cavalry and foot under Lt. Col. Michael Jones, catches a royalist cavalry force at Tarvin, Cheshire. Although the royalists are quickly dispersed, some take shelter in St. Andrews Church.
