1) Five fresh Der Greif pieces on AI, glitch & collaborative creativity Over the past month I’ve been guest-blogging for Der Greif, reflecting on how fungal networks, craft practice and even “getting it wrong” can re-wire our sense of authorship. • Cultivating the Glitch – why courting error can spark true novelty. • After Wall – re-staging Jeff Wall's photographs through an AI-mycelial lens. • Between Computation & Craft – stitching code into flip-shifting lenticular prints • The Creative Mental Act – creativity as an “in-between” relational field. • Beyond Authorship – moving from solitary genius to collaborative creativity. If distributed intelligence and sideways thinking interest you, dive in. I’d love to hear which idea resonates.

5) The Creative Mental Act By designing systems that embrace the misfire, we create space for creativity to flourish. It’s not the machine that’s creative – it’s the dialogue between us that sparks something new. dergreif.org/artist-blog/the…

6) Beyond Authorship: Creativity as Exchange “From cave paintings to code, art has always been a product of collaboration between our impulses and the technical tools we use.” What if creativity isn’t just human, but part of a wider ecology that includes machines? By viewing AI as a collaborator—not a threat—we open up new ways of thinking and making. Artists like Charlie Engman challenge narrow definitions of authorship, inviting us to ask deeper questions instead of defending old ones. dergreif.org/artist-blog/bey…

Thrilled to have been awarded a 2025 Realisation Grant for After Wall. This funding will allow me to expand my exploration of lenticular printing, creating new pieces that offer multiple perspectives within a single artwork. My hope is to eventually scale this project into a larger installation. Huge thanks to the Centre for British Photography for their support—am feeling very grateful and excited for what’s to come. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Title of the photograph below is ‘After ‘A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai)’ (2024)’ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Link in bio for full essay.

Looking forward to teaching in an upcoming workshop from Nearest Truth, where I’ll be exploring the intersections of photography, AI and science fiction. --------------------------- I’m Just Here for the Gasoline: An online photographic workshop through the lens of Science Fiction. Feb 1st - March 22nd 2025. This workshop is for people interested in world-building that incorporates futurism, the unknown, and relevant phenomena. As we stumble through technological advances, hyper-capitalism, and a potential ecological catastrophe, science fiction offers continued ways to consider possible good and bad outcomes. It offers parallels to investigate our non-fictive dilemmas.     During this eight-week course, we will think about producing work through the prism of science fiction through writing, photography, and alternative media exercises. The instructors have been brought to the course from their respective interactions with topics in which alternative technological fiction and realities influence their work. Throughout the eight-week online course, participants will be asked to make images related to the themes. The outcome is not to create a complete body of work but to begin placing oneself into the arena where one might develop. We will discuss ideas, have reading and photography assignments, and suggest how to treat the trope of sci-fi with implicit questions of its history and future, if there is to be one. nearesttruthworkshops.com/sc… With Brad Feuerhelm, @ordinarylight Geert Goiris, Feb 1 Maria Lax, Feb 8th @maria_lax_ Andre Baumecker Feb 15, @andrebaumecker Jack Latham, Feb 22 @jacklatham Alex Bocchetto, March 1 @bokketto_books Xiaofu Wang, March 8 @_xiaofuwang Ben Millar Cole, March 15 @benmillarcole Martina Hoogland Ivanow, March 22 @martinahooglandivanow Science fiction is not ‘about the future.’ Science fiction is in dialogue with the present … [the science fiction writer] indulge[s] in a significant distortion of the present that sets up a rich and complex dialogue with the reader’s here and now. -Samuel R Delany

Really excited to share this piece on AI, art, and interconnectedness - from Jeff Wall to mycelial networks to the beautiful chaos of machine dreams. Thank you Fellowship for platforming these thoughts and supporting work that lives in the spaces between human and algorithmic creativity 🍄 Full essay + images in the RT ⬇️
As part of Fellowship's mission to engage with discussions in art and advancements in technology, we are thrilled to present a text by @benmillarcole, an artist we introduced last year through his series "Computers Can’t Jump" as part of the Post Photographic Perspectives projects. In "After Wall: The Wood Wide Web and AI Art," Cole reflects on the rapid evolution of AI in art, using Jeff Wall's A Sudden Gust of Wind (After Hokusai) as a launching point. With AI now capable of reimagining intricate scenes in seconds, Cole explores how this transformation impacts authorship, creativity, and the delicate balance between inspiration and reinterpretation. Through organic motifs like fungi and mycorrhizal networks, Cole's work emphasizes the interconnected nature of AI and the artistic ecosystem, inviting us to ponder AI’s role not only as a tool but as a dynamic participant in our creative process. ↓ Here's the full text.

FIRST COVER ALERT! 🚨 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Started from the (cat)bottom now we here! My first ever magazine cover has landed - European Photography just dropped their AI issue with my ‘Fine Line Feline’ front and centre. Sometimes the universe does have a sense of humour… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The issue dives deep into our current AI moment (fitting for a magazine that’s been pushing the boundaries of photographic theory since 1980). Between its pages, you’ll find my “One Horse Landed” project alongside conversations about how we’re navigating this brave new world of pixels and prompts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For the photo theory nerds among us (hello, you lot 👋), this publication holds a special place as the home of Vilém Flusser’s groundbreaking writings. His work on the philosophy of photography basically predicted our current moment - how we’d all become entangled with our technical images, our phones, our feeds. He asked the questions we’re still grappling with: what happens when the apparatus starts making creative decisions? Are we playing with technology, or is it playing with us? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this era of deep fakes and AI art, his words hit different. Beyond honoured to have my work join this ongoing conversation about the future of image-making. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Issue 116 is out now! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #computerscantjump

Honoured to be featured in @dergreif_org Issue 17 , “One Day Soon”! This collection, curated by Torbjørn Rødland, explores how we find our place in a world shaped by rapid technological shifts. It’s particularly meaningful to have my work selected by an artist whose visual language has been a source of inspiration for over a decade. My piece Shepherdess Mess on Incline Bench Press joins the line-up. It’s part of my ongoing series Computers Can’t Jump, where I blend machine-generated phrases with my own photography to create unexpected visual compositions - a cheeky nudge to the ribs of traditional image-making, inviting viewers to peek behind the curtain of what’s possible when we let machines join the creative mosh pit. Excited to be part of this exploration alongside so many talented artists. Here’s to embracing the unexpected and finding new avenues of expression in our tech-mediated world. Issue 17 is now available for pre-order. Save 15% by ordering before the official release at Paris Photo in November 2024 @parisphotofair Cover: Iñigo Bilbao @Ibl3D

The new Runway Gen-3 is hella fun... Watch Greg, the wannabe cyber-Christ, crash and burn trying to digitise his dome. This cyber-simp has been melting his meatware for months trying to break on through, but he's about as transcendent as a pocket calculator. Face it, space cadets - some skulls are just too thick for the big trip. Greg's cosmic constipation proves it: not every monkey gets to be an astronaut. Will this atomic ass-hat ever byte the big one, or is he forever fucked as a flesh bot? Tune in and watch this e-goons dreams implode!"
