Cultural Studies DECRA fellow UniMelb. Co-author Queer Theory Now. She/Her, bisexual, pro trans! Views my own, not the University’s ✨Another world is possible✨
Greens Councillor Tim Baxter gave such an amazing speech at the Pride Centre today, for Bi+ Visibility Day. He said: “when I came out I knew I would never be queer enough for some people, and never straight enough for others”. Bless proudly out Bi+ people, you are my lifeblood!
So happy to be at the launch today of “Spaces to Be”, a report on the history of Bi+ groups in Victoria, written by Dr Hamish McIntosh. Happy Bi+ Visibility Day to all! 💖💜💙
One of my fav films of MIFF, about the empathy of psychic mediums. Shows that this is so clearly care work, people on the margins helping other marginal people feel supported. Ambiguous about the actual spirituality of it all, but compassionately told. Loved it! #MIFF2024
Watched Behind the Mountains at #MIFF2024 and I couldn’t wait for it to end. Beautiful shots of Tunisian mountains but I was stressed about the wellbeing of the kid the whole time 😰
New article out from @StaceyPagePhD et al “Emotional labour and burnout in the hair and beauty industry: A narrative review”. A must read if you’re interested in the issues facing hair and beauty workers. Open access! 💅🏻✂️💇🏽♀️

Watched two films at #MIFF2024 this morning. Immortals, a documentary about young activists in the wake of revolution in Iraq, and Pepe, an experimental film about one of Pablo Escobar’s hippos (narrated by the hippo). Honestly it was a lot for a Monday
Watched We Were Dangerous at #MIFF2024 the feature film debut from Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu. I hugely recommend it!!! It’s about girlhood and the joy in resistance, so so good 👏🏼
I watched Constance Tsang's Blue Sun Palace at #MIFF2024 and it was beautiful and melancholy but I am skeptical about how it repeats tropes of migrant salon workers as sex workers and as victims. Miliann Kang's (2013) work is instructive here (from Body/Sex/Work, excerpted below)
"What’s especially concerning is the ways in which this now makes Keir Starmer’s government susceptible to legitimising anti-trans talking points, research and conspiracies..." heterosexualnonsense.substac…
The rally has moved to Barry St where the student hearings are being held. Student Zara reminds us in her speech “while we may be facing expulsion from the University, people like Mahmoud aren’t at the University because they were murdered”
Starting now: rally to support the students facing disciplinary action for the Palestine encampment at UniMelb. Get on down to the corner of Grattan St and Swanston St. Rally endorsed by @NTEUUniMelb
Melbourne people, a reminder that this is on 9am tomorrow, and is endorsed by @NTEUUniMelb The bombs continue to fall, the least any of us can do is support the students who have fought so hard for institutional transparency in a time of genocide
Absolute Queen femme behaviour from Joan Nestle, managing to get an anecdote about her partner Di Otto reading the NY Times while wearing a strap on into the Good Weekend 🙇🏻♂️
Well this is telling - it’s almost like when Payman says she’s standing up for ordinary Labor members it’s because she is theguardian.com/australia-ne…
My feeling is that denim should only be for weekends unless you wear multiple pieces to make it less casual by doubling down. I’m wondering if @dieworkwear has thoughts
So proud of @s_xuechen for writing these reflections on beauty and diaspora. It's been amazing to have Shirley working on the DECRA project and I am always grateful for their insights

Harrowing and vital read about the racist foundations of @unimelb that stretch into the present. “I see this as a restoration job, to a degree. History has left stuff out. We’re putting it back in”

Perfectly expressed: "Unifying the left-wing and the right-wing involves the ridiculous task of unifying genocide victims with their own murderers" from @nataliesqrl's article "I’ve written over a hundred articles about the Eurovision Song Contest..."

Stumbled upon this fairly instructive pros and cons of pursuing academia list, from a PhD student retreat circa 2013. Pros: “you can hang out at home with your cat”. Cons: “poverty; anxiety (money, family, life, career, self)”
Huge crowd gathered for the student press conference at UniMelb “The University has decided that divesting from genocide is not in the National interest”
Students are planning to hold a press conference at Mahmoud’s Hall (formerly Arts West) at 3:30pm UniMelb today if people want to get down and support @Umelb4Palestine@NTEUUniMelb

University of Melbourne this morning. Students and staff walking freely and easily through Mahmoud’s Hall: it’s the University that has made the call to cancel classes
This is how UniMelb advertises itself. You’re telling me this institution can’t track and trace how its research might contribute to the deaths of brown babies in Palestine? Or, won’t?
NTEU members at UniMelb have overwhelmingly voted to support the student encampment and urge the University to disclose its ties to weapons manufacturing. Motions below (support was 98-99% for each one, ~190 members present) @Umelb4Palestine
The significance of shutting down one of the key University buildings cannot be understated. Even staff strikes last year did not equal this level of disruption to University business. Pic from @Umelb4Palestine
If the University’s aim was to make the crowd go away they have failed — it has doubled with a huge amount of supporters now outside as well as inside. Police just spotted outside the library on their way over
Happening right now in Arts West at UniMelb — the Acting Provost has told students that they have until 2:30pm to leave: “If you are not out of the building within an hour, the university will have to make decisions that will seriously escalate the tension”
