Why does inflation feel higher than the official number? Because the inflation rate is an average. Your experience of inflation isn’t. Since August 2021, overall prices in France have risen by around 17%. But groceries are up 24%, energy: 44%. And that difference matters. The inflation index is built from an average basket of goods and services. But no household actually spends according to that exact basket. For households that spend a larger share of their budget on essentials like food, energy or housing, increases in those categories can weigh much more heavily. There’s also what the index can’t fully capture: how we adapt when prices rise. If the meat you usually buy becomes too expensive, you might not spend more. You might buy a cheaper cut instead. If your usual brand goes up, you switch to a lower-cost alternative. Or you simply buy less. On paper, your spending may not have changed much. But what the same amount of money gets you has. You’re spending the same to get less, or to get a lower-quality alternative. And over time, those compromises can mean a real decline in your standard of living, even if they aren’t obvious from the headline inflation number. That’s why the official number and what you feel at the checkout can both be true. Inflation measures the average. Purchasing power is lived individually.
