Hi! I’m Gen and I’ve been working in the industry since 2003. I’m currently the studio art director at EA DICE. I wish I’d been exposed to seeing more women in games & in leadership positions when I started. I hope I can help make a difference. #WhatAGameDevLooksLike

"the non-white men at the company made a hostile environment" is the most fucked up sentence I've read in a while. gamedeveloper.com/business/e…

When people carelessly send meeting invites without checking for availability 🫠 Special mention when then throw a fit when you reply you're not available and could they please reschedule and they make it sound like you're the one being difficult 💖

The "Artists Guide to Eyebrows" video is now complete. This 60+ minute breakdown was supposed to be free, but I blew the budget on research papers & stock photos, and would love to attempt to break-even. $15 on Gumroad, but you can pay less if you need: delwalker.gumroad.com/l/brow…
Accidentally made a 53min video on the Theory of Eyebrows regarding shape, thickness, length, angle of arch, genetic & ethnic variations, natural vs styled, growth direction, historical trends, age traits, and cultural preferences. 99% certain nobody wants to fvcking watch this🤨

I would prefer ignoring the truth and forgetting about this right now and forever 😭
This is what cats' paws look like without fur. The Sphynx is a breed of cat widely known for its lack of fur and it's possibly the best candidate to show the feline anatomy in absence of fur. [📷 chantelleef]

Fair, yet there is an important nuance to note. It’s always going to be a rat race, and there are still plenty of people willing to take advantage of “passion”. Continued learning, being open minded and adaptable is important. And so is rest and taking care of oneself 👍
Me if I was teaching game art at uni and the students refused to work on their art outside of class:

Many vets start new studios. I myself was part of such an initiative a while ago. But being successful in making games in a big, oiled org is in no way a guarantee that you’ll be successful building a new studio & team. Too many people underestimate this, and fail.
What the team over at Ascendant Studios did on Immortals of Aveum is an absolute feat & this kind of thing needs to be celebrated a lot, lot more than this silent dismissal. The game does have some faults, sure. But none that are deal breakers. And for a first game? Stunning 👏

They built a studio from scratch & managed to make *and ship* their first game, with a world building - both visually and narratively - that is quite frankly of an insanely complex & ambitious scope given their size and work context. Who else can claim a similar accomplishment?

In my 20 years I’ve worked on 6 generations of consoles, who knows how many different engines/proprietary software, several technical revolutions on top of new game trends & types. Despite what one might think re: my current pro situation, I’ve never ever felt on top of things.

An unfinished thought but here goes: working in the industry is an absolute rat race, and not only where finding/keeping work is concerned. There’s always been a high rate of attrition due to harsh conditions, toxic environments but also because you never stand on solid ground.

In fact I sometimes feel like half of the challenge is staying sane being constantly behind & having to catch up, learning & relearning things, while managing to ship a game after another - not always in the best of conditions. I’m fairly confident I’m not alone on that.

We’re losing talent all the time because of this, because everything is so, so hard about making games. When does the rat race end?

Alright, I am wading into A Discourse again 🫠 There are some takes going around about art education rn, and while the threads ARE mostly full of tough love that is super valid, there are some bits and pieces that I gotta speak on because I think they lack critical nuance 🧵

So I’ve been away for a while and active over on the other place, and all I can say now is that I’m happy to still see an active community here and I’ve missed you guys ☀️

Thrown under the bus, used as a scapegoat, gaslit, taken advantage of etc. Mostly by weak people that felt threatened by me and didn’t share the same ethics as I do. But that’s ok, I’m now miles ahead of them all, both figuratively & literally while they rot in obscurity now 🖤
I wanna hear stories of how someone tried to screw you over but you succeeded anyway. That's my love language.

Softwares are just tools. Just because you’ve mastered one (or more) it doesn’t make you an artist, it makes you technically strong. Being an artist isn’t defined by software proficiency (even if it can propel you farther!).
what 3D software opinion would have you like this?
