Christa Pike was set to become the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
But the execution did not go as planned.
On Wednesday, Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. According to witnesses, officials administered two doses of the lethal drug, but Pike did not die. She was eventually taken from the prison by ambulance.
The failed execution came just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for Tennessee to proceed, overturning a last-minute stay.
Now, attention has shifted to what happens next..
