during uni, one of my side hustles was taking professional headshots. i'd grab my camera and walk around the business building this was especially effective during club rush, and i'd usually make $250+ in a few hours i'd walk up to anyone dressed up and pitch them a linkedin headshot for $25 granted, i had to work up the courage to go up to each and every person, usually 100+ a day, and got rejected a lot but it was probably the highest roi thing i did freshman year, and it made me comfortable talking to anyone

over my freshman year i told countless people i wanted to leave school and work in startups yesterday i got linkedin premium for cold outbound and could finally see who viewed my profile some of those same people have over the past few weeks i hope they're proud of where i am now

you always hear about new grads struggling with identity after graduating I think I went through a similar version a month ago I'm currently taking a gap year from umich to work at a startup, and I had everything I'd wanted: being on the founding team, money, being in sf, not having to go to school and around a month ago none of it felt like anything, nor was it fulfilling I honestly don't think there's a clear solution to this. you just have to slowly recalibrate who you are and take things day by day talking to people, anyone really, and giving each day more structure definitely helped. so did reminding myself how much of a privilege it is to have this problem to begin with I feel much better now though, and it does feel like I'm working towards something every day. i'm taking a gap year @umich as a 19 y/o to work at a startup. here's how i weighed the pros and cons: PROS - live and build a network in sf - able to pay off college tuition - startup experience - parents support me - degree only takes 3 years to complete with transfer credits from community college + IB program, so i'm not falling behind - excuse to get an o-1 visa since i'm canadian - larp as a dropout CONS - new city so it's hard to make friends - little/no time for hobbies, work is life - pressure to make the year worthwhile - honestly miss college sometimes - harder to relate to some of my friends - have to go through the o-1 visa process ultimately, i think i made the right call and i'm very hyped about how this will all turn out!

i try to set short term goals for myself that are easily attainable being in a startup is literally chewing glass and staring into the abyss, no matter how resilient you are, you will start losing motivation at some point i think it's smart to setup systems in your life so that does not happen, the feeling of you relentlessly grinding into nowhere

i constantly feel like i'm not working hard enough, even tho i'm doing 997 at a startup at the end of the day i still block 2 extra hours to work in bed, on just about anything and this mentality is so hard to get out of i can never seem to forget about work and remember how much more there is to life obviously a part of this comes from the hustle culture of sf but i think a larger part comes from growing up in an asian household nothing was ever enough, and my parents constantly pushed me to do more but honestly i'm glad for the way i am, i would've never made it this far otherwise i wish i could settle for less though, and sometimes wonder if theres even a point to working this hard i often feel so out of touch with everyone around me, but hopefully it all pays off

i always hated the idea of uni and tried finding any excuse to drop out it made me constantly feel like i was wasting the next 4 years of my life when i could be doing higher roi things i mean i could always go back to uni in the future, right? but over the past year that's shifted it's hard to imagine going back to undergrad at 25, i'd be surrounded by 18-19-20 year olds and that would be so alienating looking back i genuinely enjoyed it. it was comfortable, dorm life was fun, i was free to do whatever i wanted. and god, the energy of watching our sports team play most importantly, i was so proud to be going to one of the best public schools in the states but on the other hand, i can always go into startups. you don't really get scrutiny for starting a company no matter how old you are, the average age of yc founders is 27
