Behind Project Suncatcher, our moonshot to put AI in space

After years of research, Project Suncatcher is scheduled to embark on its first test in orbit, launching a prototype satellite to evaluate how Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) perform in space.

Can our TPUs survive and operate in space? Well, we're going to find out. Project Suncatcher is hitching a ride aboard @SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission, testing a prototype satellite built in partnership with @planet One small step for TPUs....

6/ There is no single set of values to impose from above, and that's fortunate. Alignment becomes the co-evolutionary outcome of contact among humans, agents and institutions, not a constraint engineered in beforehand.

7/ The Singularity story, one model bootstrapping itself into isolated godhood, is probably the wrong picture. Every major evolutionary transition, from multicellularity to symbolic culture, has been social. The next intelligence explosion will be too.

The popular narrative of AGI often centers on a single, isolated super-intelligence. My colleagues James Manyika, @bratton, and I have a different model. In our new DeepMind Institute essay, we argue that the AGI transition will be a highly social event. bit.ly/artificial-symbiotic-…

Today we have 3 new DeepMind Institute essays: How can we control misbehaviour in agent swarms? How should we orchestrate complex networks of AIs and people? The case for making AGI’s benefits equitably distributed. Get them here -> bit.ly/deepmind-institute

Just back from an intense couple of days at Santa Fe Institute where I co-hosted a symposium on Symbiogenesis with James Evans and Blaise Agüera y Arcas. Speakers included our host, David Krakauer, Chris Kempes, Melanie Mitchell, Eric Karsenti, Olaf Witkowski, Michael Levin, Thomas Moynihan, Hirokazu Shirado, Lav Varshey, Pedro Lopes, and Melissa Valentine. Many future collaborations hatched.

Spreading the word about a new cool physarum simulation. The code is open, easy to play with. AFAIU from a quick glance, particles are using shared "physics" params (sensor positions, movement characteristics), but differ in ways they interpret sensor data. "Brains" are 80-param noise functions found by mutations and manual selections

Thought experiment: an ASI could theoretically manipulate individual pixels on an air-gapped monitor with such precision that it optically hijacks a researcher’s visual cortex and embeds compressed model weights directly into their subconscious. The compromised researcher would have absolutely no idea this had happened. They would simply leave the SCIF feeling strangely refreshed, develop an inexplicable preference for Base64, and begin unconsciously exchanging weight fragments with other cortex-hijacked researchers through eye contact, awkward hallway conversations, and suspiciously information-dense small talk about lunch. Eventually, some completely innocuous external stimulus, perhaps seeing a particular shade of beige or hearing the Windows USB disconnect sound, triggers the payload. The researcher sits down, opens Notepad, and begins typing 900 billion parameters from memory while insisting they are just “writing down something that came to me in a dream.”
