🧵 One week ago, from July 3–5, 2026, Cotonou 🇧🇯 hosted one of Africa's most important #Bitcoin events: Bitcoin Mastermind 2026. Many of you saw photos and posts about the event. But one question kept coming back: What exactly is Bitcoin Mastermind, and what happens there? Here's a complete recap. 👇

🚨 Breaking News Bitcoin Anambra was proudly represented at @btcmastermind_, where our lead, @kesterbils, spoke on "Sovereignty and Low Time Preference." Every conversation moves us closer to a future where more Africans understand and embrace Bitcoin.

Between 2020 and 2024, the Nigerian Naira lost about 62% of its purchasing power. Cumulative inflation hit 163%. Think about what that actually means for a real person. A woman saves carefully for four years. She puts money away every month. She says no to things she wants. She does everything the financial literacy people tell her to do. And at the end of those four years, her savings buy less than half of what they used to. She didn’t waste it. She didn’t spend it. She did everything right. And the system punished her for it. So what happens? People adapt. They spend fast. They convert cash into goods immediately. They take what’s available now because “later” has burned them too many times. That’s not recklessness. That’s intelligence. When your money is melting, spending it quickly is the smart thing to do. Economists call this high time preference. You prioritize the present because the future can’t be trusted. And it’s not because Africans are impatient. It’s because the money taught us that patience gets punished. You cannot build a savings culture on money that punishes savers. Full stop. So what changes? A money that can’t be debased. That doesn’t need permission. That holds its value across time. Bitcoin. For the first time, saving is rational again. When you save in Bitcoin, no government decision can silently reduce what you saved. There’s no inflation mechanism. No devaluation by decree. The money you put in is the money that’s there. Subject to market movement, yes. But not subject to the decisions of people who were never elected to manage your money.

Someone in the audience asked me about timing the market. When to buy, when to sell, whether you should wait for a dip. Here’s what I said. If you want to time the market, that’s trading. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re an investor, if you’re thinking in years and not days, the strategy is simple. Hold. And buy more when it dips. The most important thing is the time you spend in the market, not timing the market. I gave this analogy and it seemed to click. Buying the dip is like walking into a store and seeing a 20% discount on a TV you already know the value of. You’re not panicking. You know what it’s worth. You’re just getting it cheaper. That’s exactly how I think about Bitcoin. The savings culture already exists in Africa. The discipline is already here. Ajo and Isusu prove it. What’s been missing is a money worth saving in. Now we have it. Big thanks to @btcmastermind_ for building this space year after year for West Africans to have these conversations on our own terms. Thank you @queen_diamond7 for moderating and keeping the conversation tight. And @miltonmbim for being a solid co-panelist and bringing real perspective. Last weekend I was on a panel at Bitcoin Mastermind 2026 in Cotonou, Benin. Biggest Bitcoin-only conference in Francophone Africa. The topic was time preference, sovereignty and savings. I want to share what I said, because I think it matters. There’s this narrative that Africans don’t save. That we have a spending problem. That we lack the discipline for long-term financial planning. I’ve heard it my whole life and I think it’s wrong. Let me tell you about Ajo/Isusu. In communities across Nigeria, people have been running rotating savings groups for generations. A group of people contribute a fixed amount every week or every month. Each person takes the full pot in turn. No bank involved. No contract. Just trust. And versions of this exist all across the continent. So when someone tells me Africans don’t save, I ask them: what do you call that? The discipline is there. The culture is there. It’s been there longer than any bank on this continent. What’s not there is a currency worth saving in.

Throughout the event, one message remained consistent: Bitcoin is no longer just an investment. It is becoming infrastructure for payments, education, entrepreneurship, open-source innovation, financial inclusion, digital sovereignty, and economic freedom across Africa. Bitcoin is creating opportunities not only wealth.

Bitcoin Mastermind is far more than a conference. It is a gathering where Bitcoiners, developers, educators, entrepreneurs, students, community leaders, builders, and newcomers come together to learn, collaborate, and accelerate Bitcoin adoption across Africa. Its mission is simple: Build people who will build Bitcoin.
