🚨☣️ UPDATE — RUSSIA PLAGUE INCIDENT
New reporting adds a significant security dimension to the Siberia plague incident.
Local Russian media report that FSB units accompanied ambulances transporting people who had contact with the deceased Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute laboratory worker for medical examination.
The FSB is Russia’s principal domestic security and counterintelligence service and the successor organization to major domestic functions of the Soviet KGB.
Its involvement is notable. It indicates the response has expanded beyond a routine local public-health operation and includes Russia’s security apparatus. However, FSB involvement alone does not establish that quarantine was involuntary or that Moscow has formally classified the incident as a national-security event.
Local reporting also continues to allege that the laboratory worker became infected after breaking a tube containing the plague pathogen while working at the institute. That account remains unconfirmed by Russian health authorities.
BOTTOM LINE: No secondary plague infections have been confirmed. But reported FSB involvement, nearly 200 identified contacts, hospital quarantine, and the unresolved circumstances of a possible laboratory exposure increase the significance of the incident and warrant continued monitoring.
WATCH: Secondary cases, confirmation of pneumonic plague, official confirmation of the laboratory accident, expansion of quarantine measures, or additional federal/security involvement.
