How do innate cognitive characteristics relate to success in STEM? Proud to share a new series of studies on visual imagery and STEM, including some surprising gender-specific effects involving (lack of) object imagery on computational processing. doi.org/10.31234/osf.io/c5ue…

🧵 What about “space” is important for episodic memory? Out now in WIREs Cog Sci, we review historical and current thinking on the relationship between space & memory and suggest that the key link is the involvement of visuospatial imagination. doi.org/10.1002/wcs.1645 1/7

Similarly, ontological variation is underutilized in understanding how memory and spatial cognition relate. For instance, the building blocks for allocentric representations are in place within the 1st year of life, whereas episodic memory emerges much later in childhood. 6/7

Consideration of naturalistic processing and translational barriers is needed to clarify the overlap between spatial processing and episodic memory in humans. Big thanks to co-authors @hm_sokolowski @RosenbaumLab @briantlevine and to @rotmanresearch 🤩 doi.org/10.1002/wcs.1645 7/7

🧵Autobiographical memory—memory for our personal past—has been a topic of study since the 19th century. We summarize the state of knowledge in the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Human Memory (eds: Kahana & Wagner): psyarxiv.com/9c6b8/ 1/
Thanks to the contributions of an amazing group of field-leading authors, Mike Kahana and Anthony Wagner (@SUMemoryLab) are excited to announce that the Oxford Handbook of Human Memory is nearing publication! Chapters can be found at: memory.psych.upenn.edu/Oxfor…

Banaji & Crowder declared everyday memory research “bankrupt” in 1981. But AM research has only increased since then. Emerging trends include hybrid lab/real-life paradigms, lifespan development, and AM’s relationship to different types of imagery. 9/

Now, what about the development of navigation? Children use landmarks for place learning after 21 months of age, and individual differences in cognitive map building stabilize around age 12. This is older than the offset of childhood amnesia (age ~8ish).

Dr. Newcombe's group is now developing a Temple Tour (inspired by our lab's Baycrest Tour!) where children can be tested on their memory for objects and navigation. They're also currently collecting MRI data from these participants 🧠
