Case 11: Anneliese Michel
Anneliese Michel struggled with a range of mental health problems, such as seizures, sleep paralysis, hallucinations and violent behaviour. After years of unsuccessful treatment, her condition deteriorated, and she began experiencing pain around religious objects and sites, leading her to believe she was possessed by demons.
In 1975, Anneliese's family turned to the Catholic Church for treatment. They eventually convinced two Catholic priests to perform an exorcism on Anneliese but the results were far from what they were hoping for.

21-year-old Britt Lapthone loved to travel, so her decision to backpack solo through Europe came as no surprise. In mid-2008, she set off on an adventure that eventually brought her to Dubrovnik, Croatia.
After a night out at local hotspot Club Fuego, Britt’s hostel bed was found empty the next morning, while her phone, passport and belongings remained. Had she simply had too much to drink, or was something far more serious at play?

On the morning of September 6 2011, Auckland teenager Christie Marceau was woken by a troubling phone call from an acquaintance, Akshay Chand. The two 18-year-olds had previously worked together at a supermarket, and Chand was threatening to take his own life.
Kind-hearted Christie rushed to help, unaware the troubled young man was luring her into a trap. The events that followed would send shockwaves through New Zealand.
