One thing that really stood out to me during Sugar’s interview was when she talked about the time they came to Nigeria and wanted to have their court wedding. She said he insisted that she shouldn’t have her makeup done, and when she insisted, he told her she shouldn’t “make this what it’s not.” Please, what exactly does that mean? Because what do you mean your court wedding is not something worth celebrating? And then another thing that genuinely blew my mind was when she talked about them going to a local restaurant to eat amala. We all know those places usually have that shared bowl of water for washing your hands. She said the water was literally across from him, yet he kept insisting that she push it towards him. Because she didn’t, he refused to take her home, locked her out of his car and told her, “Is it your father that bought the car for me?” Then she woke up the next day to see her husband in a white tank top, cooking egusi for another woman. And honestly, listening to all of this is making me question the entire situation differently. Was Sugar simply a victim of what was happening to her, or had she become so accustomed to certain things that she accepted them because, for whatever reason, she believed that was what she deserved? Because some of these stories are genuinely difficult to process.
