Proposal 1 is statewide and proposes adding anti-discrimination provisions to the State Constitution. Proposals 2 through 6 are the result of Mayor Adams’ rushed Charter Revision Commission and could significantly impact the responsiveness, transparency, and accountability of city government to New Yorkers. Earlier this year, Mayor Adams rushed through a Charter Revision Commission process to advance ballot proposals that would change the city’s constitution. They could weaken checks-and-balances, making city government less responsive to New Yorkers. The commission bypassed the current lawmaking process — which allows New Yorkers to shape our laws with their input over the course of 271 days — advancing the mayor’s proposals to the General Election ballot just 2 days after they were announced publicly.

According to Governor Hochul, his last conversation with her was about congestion pricing, urging her to see it through. While Governor Hochul may have abandoned the promise she made to a devoted public servant on his deathbed, the MTA board acts independently of the governor. The Public Authorities Reform Act was created to give the MTA independence. ALT My name is Aditya and I am a Columbia College alumnus. I’m dismayed that President Shafik called the NYPD Strategic Response Group against students. Deploying police against students is an act of violence and a dereliction of her duty to care for undergraduates. That alone is egregious, but suspending students and kicking them out of their housing in the middle of the night are the acts of a dictator, not an educator. Even the NYPD admitted that there was no clear and present danger, and that the protestors were nonviolent and peaceful. The students’ suspensions need to be reversed, and the protesters’ demands - which are entirely reasonable - need to be met immediately. Columbia has a long tradition of free speech and student activism. If President Shafik is not capable of fostering that tradition, she should resign.
