Ratepayers, wake up: Cape Town’s new by-law is a direct attack on your rights The DA-led City of Cape Town has just pushed through a Municipal Planning By-law that treats residents like afterthoughts. Building plans for multi-storey developments next door? You’ll only hear about them after they’re already approved. The only “notice” is a bare listing on a municipal website. Miss it, and tough luck. Want to see the actual plans? Apply, then pay a prescribed fee — so typical of the DA — just to access what is being built beside your home. Worse: once you get those plans, sharing the details with fellow ratepayers or your local association is now a criminal offence unless it fits their narrow “lawful purpose” rules. Ratepayers’ organisations have effectively been muzzled. Public debate is shut down. This isn’t transparency — it’s controlled, paywalled access designed to protect developers while leaving neighbours in the dark until the concrete is pouring. Democratic? Hardly. Real participation happens before decisions are locked in, not after. Relying on people to constantly check a website and then charge them for basic information is exclusionary and insulting. Criminalising the free flow of information about what is being built in our own streets violates the spirit of open government and free expression. THE DA FORGET THAT THEY ARE PUBLIC SERVANTS. THEY THINK THAT THEY OWN OUR HOMES AND NEIGHOURHOODS. We do not want this by-law.
