Asia is an unparalleled economic success, but also home to some of the world’s most dangerous, diverse, and divisive challenges. In my 2016 Carnegie book, "Fault Lines in a Rising Asia," I explore the fundamental dichotomy that defines contemporary Asia. ceip.org/p-63365

Conservative candidate Yoon Suk-yeol wins critical presidential election in S Korea. Much stronger alliance w/ America, countering NK threats, ramping up techno alliance w/ the US & other partners, improving ties with Japan, & politically supporting Ukraine are all key issues.

Great recognition of two outstanding journalists fighting for freedom. All governments, even democratic ones with the penchant to muzzle free expression, must listen to the people's voice. asia.nikkei.com/Politics/Int…

I am very happy to share my latest report from Carnegie on the impact of the May 2021 US-ROK summit. A technology alliance between the US and South Korea heralds the beginning of a new era as the US-China rivalry intensifies. carnegieendowment.org/2021/0…

Just uploaded a commentary on the Moon-Biden summit today. North Korea is an important agenda but the more relevant point is transforming the alliance into a post-Covid global partnership. carnegieendowment.org/2021/0…

Representative Liz Cheney spoke truth to power. It took a lot of courage since she expected blowback from her party's diehard Trumpistas. But in the end, she will prevail. Kudos to Rep. Cheney for her principled stance!

My assessment of the opposition conservative party's resounding April 7 victory in the Seoul and Busan mayoral by-elections. Expect to see a brutal year-long campaign to succeed President Moon in March 2022 & reshaping of Korean politics & foreign policy. carnegieendowment.org/2021/0…

RIP Hong Kong. A free & democratic Hong Kong lasted just 24 years after its reversion to China. As this happened, Asian Democracies just blinked & carried on. But an infinitely greater danger lies ahead: how a free, democratic, & a prosperous Taiwan can be preserved.

People think I’m joking when I say Kim Jong Un’s health is the biggest risk to his rule. I’m not. Look at this:
What a difference a decade makes. October 2010 vs January 2021. @alistaircoleman and I were talking Kim Jong Un weight gain but this progression deserves its own tweet. This is why many think the biggest threat to Kim is his own health.

"I seek a kind person who will educate my intelligent boy, aged 11." This was the personal ad my Viennese grandparents put in the Manchester Guardian in August 1938, looking for someone to take in my father. It saved his life. He was fostered by a wonderful Welsh couple.

Terrific news that Jung Pak is the new Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Team Biden has a top notch Asia/Korea specialist with critical experience in the IC.
